Okay... so Cason and I have FINALLY decided that enough is enough...
It's time for some living room furniture.
It's been over 2 years since we've owned a couch upstairs... at ALL!
So... overjoyed about our decision, and a bit naive...
We headed out to "Couch Shop!"
Whoo hoo!.... right?
.
.
.
Um... NO.
We hit up about 10 different furniture stores and
N-O-T-H-I-N-G!
Really... not ONE SINGLE COUCH "spoke to us"
I mean... we would LOVE to head over to our local Pottery Barn and snag the
"perfect couch" for a cool $2,300 bucks...
But on our budget... that just ain't gonna happen!
What I Want:
I know that I want a light cream colored couch. ALMOST white.
(YES, I have 3 kids... NO, I'm not crazy) lol
This couch will be a "display couch"... a place for all those "pretty pillows,
and for "nice sitting"... when guests come over.
Our living room is the FIRST thing you see and walk into, in our home,
but rarely where we do a lot of "hanging out"
So I'm not too worried about the light color.
We also want a really small sectional (with NO chaise lounge) or just a traditional 3 seater.
So I guess my questions are...
* Have YOU found your perfect couch and WHERE?
* Is Pottery Barn REALLY the ONLY place that makes MY "perfect couch?"
* Does it REALLY have to cost over $1,200 buck-a-roo's?
* And if it does (and we're just dumb virgin couch buyers)...
do you cover it in plastic, after you buy it, so as to NEVER damage it,
because it costs almost as much as your husbands CAR!?!?
lol... okay, don't really answer that last question. ha!

So are we the only ones with a "sofa hold-up?"
Are we just stuck with paying the $500 bucks for the "Pottery Barn look-a-like" from IKEA, that
(from what I read) doesn't have that great of a lifespan, (and from what I see) always looks disheveled and floppy, in the store?
I'd love any advice!

You need to check out Room and Board. I bought their Kendall, and got it slipcovered in white- it's AWESOME! Plus, unlike most slipcovered sofas- mine is upholstered in a yummy blue velvet- so I use the velvet in winter, and slipcovers the rest of the year. I LOVE it. It's made in America, and a fraction of Pottery Barn.

I would also love the pottery barn one, but with two little boys and that much money, ain't gonna happen! The closest I have found is at a place called Living spaces, but we are in so. cal and not sure if it's in utah? Good luck! (I also considered the ikea version till I sat on it, not comfy!)
ReplyDeleteI was just in this boat... there are so few options, I agree. Do you want the slipcover option? I think that makes things even more limited. That is the way we went though. I found the issue with the IKEA sofa and others was that they were not deep enough. My husband is tall and those shallow couches were just not comfy. Anyway, best of luck! We did end up "having" to go with the PB sectional. I will say we love it! Can't wait to hear what you end up with! Whatever it is, I know it will look great!

we found one online at jcpenneys. their jada collection. i don't know if they still have that collection, but i love mine. it is slipcovered and a light cream color and i have 4 young boys and it is the only sofa we have in our small house and it really handles children well. wehn we bought ours they had sectionals and sofas, but i haven't looked at them for a while.
ReplyDeleteI have had the IKEA couch in black and two of the matching chairs in white for about three years now. I love them. They are sturdy and mine aren't disheveled. The slipcovers are washable (they are a pain to get on and off). I think it's a very comfortable set. If it's most for display anyway, you shouldn't have a problem with it. I can email you pictures of my couch to show you what it looks like after three years.

We love it. We did not buy the teal color in the picture. Anyway, there are tons of colors and types of fabric, even more than are shown in the picture. It comes in a taupe color and we got a taupe, but in a different type of fabric. We did have to special order it, but I think it was only like $50 more... totally worth it, in my opinion, to get what I really wanted. Anyway, the South Towne Mall Macy's has furniture and that's where we bought it.
Heh ... I know the feeling!!! When I moved to my current apartment back in May, I listed my 15-year old sofa on Craig's List and it was gone in a matter of hours!
ReplyDeleteMy dream sofa is also off-white or putty with big rolled arms and loose pillows for the back; possibly a slipcover style, but I can be flexible about that. :-) I've found one, sometimes even two, of these features in a sofa, but haven't yet found all of them, at least not in a sofa I can afford, i.e., $1,000 or less. Literally everyone I've talked to (friends to furniture salespeople) has said that anything under $1,000 isn't worth buying these days.
I've also considered IKEA, and I've considered just getting an affordable ($500-ish) sofa that I mostly like and hope for the best. There are no kids here, and I'm not hard on furniture myself. It's just sooooo hard to believe that ALL furniture is made to fall apart in just a couple of years, even without much use.
In the meantime, a friend is giving me a nice-size futon (frame & really thick mattress); I just need to move it, and finding someone to help with that has been quite a challenge!

Give clubfurniture.com a looksee. I know, it's shopping online and I'm big on seeing things first hand, but they have a great selection, good prices, and really good quality. Plus they come slipcovered or upholstered. Good luck on your hunt...we're starting ours after the first of the year. Can't wait to see what you choose!
ReplyDeleteI would say Ikea or do you have a Macy's by you. That is where we got our look a like Pottery Barn one. And I just moved it upstairs to our living room...the first thing you see, because we want to spend more time up there vs. the basement family room...making that for the kiddos!

ReplyDeleteI have the IKEA sectional cornor sofa (just like your pic) in my playroom and we have had it for 3 yrs (it is used all day long everyday- I have a 3 1/2 yr old and 17 month old- they are not allowed many other places in our house :)and have no problems and LOVE the slipcovers. ReplyDeleteWe purchased the Ikea sectional like the pottery barn one pictured and we got the Svanby Beige cover. It is a linen blend like the Pottery Barn ones and is very good quality fabric. You can purchase the sectional around $1000, so it may be a better option than PB...and you can order new covers for under $200 each whenever you want to change or need new ones. I just pictured this sofa in my living room design on my blog, so stop by and you can see the actual sofa. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest Sofa Mart as well, as they advertise that NOBODY beats their prices. However, I have NO IDEA when it comes to a light colored couch. I mentally block those kind out of my mind because I once had an ivory couch for our formal room, BEFORE we had kids. The ONLY time it was ever used was when the home teachers came over - or some church related visit - or for big family FHE's, which we hosted about 4 times a year. Within a year, there were dirty marks (with, of course, those natural body oils you don't think about)from their heads and hands AND shoes where they'd sit. I had THREE professional cleaners come out to clean them to no avail. I couldn't stand it. The spots were SO visible and gross. Since we paid to have and were supposed to have been "scoth guarded" to protect against stains, etc., I was able to get a refund. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! I hope you have better luck than I did 15 years ago. =)
ReplyDeleteI would try downeast home. (as I'm sure you know) they have tons of PB/williams sonoma/ west elm furniture. Usually it's dirty, but when it's slipcovered even having it professionally cleaned should be easy. I don't know what your budget is, but even that route can be pricey.
ReplyDeleteI would try a "scratch and dent" store. I'm from St. George, so ours really is just The Boulevard. But in the SLC valley there is the RC Willey Scratch and dent. Basically alot of big chain stores have a clearance section, or a place at their warehouse you can go in and talk to someone that works there and get the bottom line price - those workers aren't salesmen, so they don't need to tack on commission.
Also, I would search KSL classifieds and Craigslist ( Use craigseasy to make things faster and less frustrating ). There is alot of junk, but I'm sure if you are patient you can find what you want for the price you are wanting to pay. Good luck! Love your blog, you're the cutest!

DeleteSomeone else mentioned the Linden Street sofas at JC Penneys. I recently bought the sofa & loveseat in the off white color. With the sale they had going, coupons I found online, I got both of them for less than $2000. And so far I love them. I know someone who has the same sofa for three years now & they still love theirs & it has held up very well even with 3 grandkids on it a lot. You can find it online at jcpenney.com. I'ved owned an off-white set (sofa and love seat)for 13 years and they looked fantastic (even though they were used frequently) until the last year or two, thanks to a new puppy. My set lasted through my daughter's early years and now she's 16. Unfortunately, my bank account will not afford new furniture for a while. Good luck on your search!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were having the same dilemma. We just bought a new home, that is twice the size of our current home, so we needed some furniture to fill it. We've been buying stuff like crazy on craigslist. We picked up an amazing sectional for our new great room that was a month old (this army couple was divorcing and relocating) in like new condition for only $500! I've even seen some awesome Pottery Barn furniture on CL that is new and has only been used to stage homes. You can get great deals for half the price! Good luck!

Ikea.......they have a few styles at different prices starting around $399 that are slipcovered. Thats where Im getting mine. I too have been looking for the same thing. Then you can have a spare cover if something happens to one....or if you want to change to another color or pattern.

We've had the IKEA one for coming up to 5 years now and we DO a lot of hanging out on it. It is in constant use, so yes, at times it looks a little disshevelled, but only because my boy keeps on taking all the cushions out to build his fortresses and then can't quite put them back properly lol
ReplyDeleteBut seriously ... it doesn't look sloppy by itself. In fact it looks really nice until my 5 year olds are let loose on it. We have the one that is over the corner and also has a fold up double bed hidden in it.
Another really awesome thing are the washable covers! Now we don't have white, we have the beige one, but it still gets quite grubby with a LOT of use, including food stains etc. Toss it all in the washing machine and it comes out like new.
Now one way you can really get a dishevelled look on these is if you over-dry the covers. It's best to dry them only until slightly damp, then put them back on, so you don't get wrinkles on the covers. Or iron them before putting them on, but that's way to work intensive for me lol
Anyway, I am a fan of the couch for sure. It is also very comfortable for young and old alike, which is a huge bonus! And it has had daily rough use for 5 years and a move now and still looking very good.

Remember your post a few days ago when you answered a question about decorating your house with kids? You tell your kids that an item is very important to you and that you would be very hurt if something were to happen to it.
Do the same thing with said couch. And if you only spend 500 bucks, that leaves you with extra cash to spend on pillows and other stuff! :)
If you don't to this already, I recommend having a rule in place where the kids are only allowed food AND drink in the kitchen/dining areas. NO WHERE ELSE. But this rule should be kept by you and the man of the house too. :) Of course I have no kids so maybe it's easier said than done? But really - that is how I was raised and there wasn't ever an issue that I can recall.

I'm in Canada so maybe it's different here, but our Ikea Ektorp's come with a 10 year warranty on their frame. That with the slipcovers you can change your style with, I think is the best. PLUS, I've seen people make covers for Ikea furniture for that "custom" look. Here's a link to some on Etsy:

I live in Ky and we are broke, dont intend on buying a couch anytime soon and have no clue on how to shop for furniture. both of our couches are hand-me-downs. we have a pink couch that used to be my moms from before i was even born its almost 30 years old. anyway the point of this is to tell u i love all the couch pictures and I LOOOOOVE the striped couches too!!! super cute!
ReplyDeleteI sooooo HEAR you about sofa's ughhh!! I had the same issue when we were furniture shopping . It seems there is NOTHING out there that has the cottage feel. I did finally find a GREAT source with Broyhill furniture. The BEST part about Broyhill is YOU PICK THE FABRIC. I first go online and check out the styles of sofa's than I head to RC willey and check out all the fabrics, I collect all the fabric names and style numbers of the patterns I like. Than I call U & I furniture in Logan, Utah to Order. There prices are ALWAYS a ton cheaper than the prices ANYWHERE in SLC. They also deliver which is awesome!! I hope that helps!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

ReplyDeleteI want that pottery Barn couch like crazy! I have a sturdy couch that I hate the pattern on and I am slipcovering to make it look the same. (not the baggy cover, the kind you cant tell is slipcovered because its so tight and has a zipper hidden in the piping, and then you can throw in the wash.) But at least check out slipcovers by shelley! Her stuff looks like its uphostered. I actually bought a dvd from her (and no she isnt paying me to say this:)Hop on her blog she is here in Utah! This was the closest I came to my pottery barn couch without spending much.
ReplyDeleteDowneast here in Idaho Falls, has numerous off white sofas for pretty decent prices. Have you checked online...like Overstock? Or homereserve.com you can create your own for a good price. We have purchased online and at our local furniture stores, locally we always get a business card with the furniture info on it and their price from the salesperson, then check a couple other places, call the place we want the most and ask for a better deal. We have never been disappointed. They have always made a deal.

It's an every day driver for all of us, a trampoline for Jack, my favorite place to eat lunch and watch Nate, etc.
I think it's a pretty great couch as far as cheap couches go. We had already gone through 2 other $500 couches in 6 years and the Ektorp is a keeper.
Getting the slipcovers on takes some serious muscle though. I have to whine to get my husband to do it. (But then again, I am hugely pregnant and well, I can barely get to the bathroom much less put on slipcovers right now!)

Their prices are really reasonable, and their lines are really clean. We actually have a Z Gallerie couch (dk. brown) that we bought at Down East. It's kind of indestructable. We've really liked it. We're saving for one of their leather ones.

We were looking for new living room furniture but had a very small budget. I love light colored sofas (slipcovers are a must when going with a light color). So I found a couch on craigslist that was a decent shape and made a slipcover out of natural denim. The slipcover wasn't that difficult to make- the cushions are the hardest part. There are books that are very helpful which you can probably check out from your local library. I think I used Slipcover Style by Alison Wormleighton. If you just look for a couch that is the right shape, size and basic style you are looking for and then make a slipcover. I bought our couch for $100 and then spent $120 on the fabric at fabric.com. Dharma Trading has white and natural bull denim for great prices, although I prefer a slightly heavier weight than what they carry.

ReplyDeleteI feel your pain! I love to decorate but HATE shopping for furniture. Well.. unless you're not looking, then you find everything under the sun! I have a couch and chair that is the same style as Pottery Barn and they are from Rowe at a place called Hom Furniture. I was able to pick out my slipcover (blue and white striped) and had it custom ordered. I don't remember it being near that much money but it was probably 5 or 6 years ago! I love it so much I want to bring it from the basement upstairs.

Have you tried DownEast for the PB discount couch? I'm guessing you tried RCW (they might now have it on the floor but could order?) Ethan Allen with a good sale? ZGallerie at the Gateway?
ReplyDeleteI got my set at RCW. I LOVED it. For 6 years it was really me. Now it's notsomuch. But for what I paid it's good to retire to the basement for another year and then I can say "SEE YA!"

ReplyDeleteWe have one living room, and we got our couch at LaZBoy. The color is called "Spruce" and it's like a teal-ish woven upholstery. It wasn't cheap but since it's what we spend almost all our home time on, we figured it was worth it to invest in the best. It's held up so well to spills, cats, dogs, etc. I don't for one second regret spending the money we did to get solid furniture.
BUT. Since this is for a second living room (I'm guessing it's more about staging than function) try IKEA! I haven't bought furniture there, but I've heard it's awesome.
Ugh I hear ya too. It took me 3 years but I finally found the perfect furniture for my family room. I got a floor model leather sofa at noble house in bountiful then lucked out and found two cream tufted chairs thry where also floor models at rcwilley. My family room is really big and I got another couch and ottoman for $500 which was really $4000 couch at miya design in syarcuse I really lucked out on that. So my point is shop the seasonal sells asked when they change their floor models. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have almost all of the ektorp pieces for the money they are wonderful , the slipcovers wear out before the sofas , my advice if you get white is to get two slips , that way when they need cleaning you always have one ready to go , white is great because it is bleachable.

The first sectional pictured (besides the pottery barn one) looks very much like my sectional from IKEA. It's the Karlstad and I LOVE it. The slipcovers are fitted instead of loose, like the Ektorp. Mine is dark gray, but they have it in white and cream. The only thing I didn't like was the selection of legs- either very light wood or stainless. I ended up buying some on ebay and they screwed right in. I couldn't be happier.

I own the IKEA couch pictured for 6 years now. Here are a few pros and cons
ReplyDelete- mine looks dishevled since the slipcover sags at the base and I can never get it to look right. I am thisclose to just stapling the damn thing in place.
- it is sturdy and holds up well to my weight (250 lbs)
- The seat is not as deep as normal couches and I have a hard time cuddling up on it when I want to pull my feet up.
-love the slipcvoer feature. I use it often when my cat inevitably pukes on it or something.
-NEVER dry the slipcovers in the dryer. They will shrink and you will have to buy new.
-If in a house with kids and will be used often then get the IKEA couch. If something happens then you won't really care since it was a cheap couch. If you dole out money for Pottery Barn and someone spills on it you will be PISSED.
-If you ever get sick of the color you have lots of options to change the cover.
- final thought. I want the Pottery Barn couch SO BAD since the IKEA one kinda loks a little run down now. However, I have a 18 month old and I think I wil be keeping it out of sheer practicality of having a toddler in the house.

I'm all about spending the money on a good quality sofa...mine has been recovered once, I think it's about 15 years old. I just watched my mom go through 3 bad quality couches over the years and mine is still going strong. BUT...if it's not your everyday sit here and type this comment kind of couch then I say go check out the Ikea couch. Good luck!!

Shelly, I have had the ektorp sectional for almost 2 years now. I have the white slipcover, which I use spring and summer. (Actually, this year I just changed it about two weeks go when we put up our tree!) and the charcoal gray that I love for fall and winter. I have three girls, 10, 6, and 2 1/2, and 2 dogs and a cat! The couch has definitely been through the ringer here. My youngest wiped her oreo cookie face all over the white cushions a few months ago. I can't believe how well they wash up! I even wash the gray one that's supposed to be dry clean only! My hint: air dry the covers, FULLY. I don't have any struggles getting the covers back on other than the large piece that goes on the main sofa is a bit cumbersome to work with. If you'd like a picture, I can email you one. But I say definitely try it. We have used and abused this sofa and have not had one stain/mark that hasn't come off in the wash. I just spray any stains with a pretreater before I throw it in.
ReplyDeleteOk I didn't read all of the comments, but yes, furniture is WAY expensive. My advice? Save up for what you really want. We paid cash for our leather set and couldn't be happier. We did the thrifty craigslist thing before with a sofa, and it was not right. Not right at all! Don't skimp on the big items--they need to be good quality. :) So yea, head on down to pottery barn girl! hehe

Not sure if you have an Ashley Furniture store near you, but we got ours there, and it's a light cream color. Plus it's microfiber, which for spills, stains, cat ickness (we have 5) ;), it's a blessing. Even dried on stuff comes right off with a lil soap and water. And Bonnie at House of Grace even got pen off some microfiber cream colored chairs with Basic H2. Hi Shelley, My daughter found the perfect Pottery Barn down-filled sofa with slipcovers in great condition on craigslist. There is an application that you can type in what you are looking for, and you will get an email when that item is listed on your local craigslist. Its at http://heycraigapp.com/
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, if you decide to go with IKEA, you may be able to fluff up the cushions by removing the cushions from the slipcovers and wrapping them in batting/down. I've seen Sabrina Soto use that trick on HGTV.

I have had the same frustrating experience this month. It was supposed to be fun...go pick out a brand new couch. Nope. Hated it and ended up spending more than I had hoped on something I am not in love with. However, I couldn't find the love - so what's a girl to do!

My husband and I were in the same boat a few years ago. Everywhere we went we couldn't find the right look with the right color for the right price. Finally, after visiting one locally owned store for the third time, one of the sales people sat down with us and let us look through binder after binder full of catalogs. For some reason, they didn't mention them the first two times we were in there. We found a couch we LOVED that way. They didn't have that one on the floor (obviously), but they did have the chair and a half from that set, so we could see if we liked the feel of that furniture line. Furniture stores have access to so many more sets than you see when you walk through the store. With our store, once we picked our couch, we were able to go through a few large boxes full of fabric options, and then also pick the fabric for the pillows (not from the same set swatch as our couch material). It didn't cost any more to go this way (we could have chosen a higher quality fabric or from a different line of fabrics and paid more).

the sofa is only $500, I think it's pretty.... even if it is a light taupe:)

If you are just dead set on getting the exact size, color, and sectional that PB carries, and you can't find anything like it anywhere else cheaper, than I would say go for it.
ReplyDeleteBut if you can, try to go through JCP or Ikea, because you aren't going to sacrifice quality in that department. I just mean that if you ask any designer or furniture maker they will tell you that PB is all about buying style, not longevity, so as far as the quality of sofas, you might as well group them on the lower scale. As far as Willams Sonoma goes though, this isn't the case, even though they are the same company. See Apartment Therapy for more info.

Your picture of your dream sofa from Pottery Barn is also mine. I want the whole room, so I told my husband I only needed about 5000 dollars for Christmas. (hehe) We had a good laugh. Seriously why is it so expensive?? But, Pier One Imports has some similar furniture for much better prices that I also LOVE!!

ReplyDeleteI hear your on this couch problem. I hate, HATE, hate my current couch. Its not very me. It'll make a nice piece in a basment rec. room one day. but not in my living room.
Since you said you won't use it too much the Ikea might hold up. I've only ever really see it used in "just graduated college have my first apt" kind of settings where it really gets used a ton so that might be part of it.
I'm not from Utah (although I find it funny that all the blogs I love, ultimately are written by utah residents), but I do remember on my last trip there an Ashley furniture store-- that I was uber jealous of. They always have this couch on their commercial that is a beige sectional with grommets on the bottom on TV here (In Rhode island) yet we don't have an Ashley store within 200 miles (go figure-- kind of how Sonic advertises here but the closest one is 60 miles away)....
Other than that, did you check Overstock? They have a great furtniture selection-- but pay attention to the reviews.
And from experience. A sloppy couch without well formed cushins will easily become the bain of your existence. I fluff my cushins at least 4 times a day. It's become routine, Wake up, fluff, come home from work fluff....you get the idea.
About the couch. I actually found a light tan sectional that looks like it came from Pottery Barn in a local furniture store. It was on sale because it was going out of production. BIG mistake. I have regretted getting the light tan so many times. Why? Because it’s NOT white. I cant use bleach on the slip cover and because my kids are small, I have to wash the slip cover…a lot! So the pieces are all different shades of light tan. Not cute. My DD recently tried to “help” clean something off the couch by grabbing a bottle of spray cleaner with bleach. Hello big bleach spot. I have a girlfriend who purchased a white one and guess what, she LOVES hers because she can bleach it. Hope you find the perfect one for your family and a killer price.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was five I jumped on my parents living room white "show" couch, bumped my nose, and bled all over it. Don't try a light couch without slipcovers or a very good steam cleaner. I bought the Ikea sectional and it always looked like an Ikea sectional. Sold it on Craigslist for $200-- 7 years later and bought a pottery Barn couch for our formal living room for $200. It is the perfect color, but I could always get slipcovers made. I splurged on our family room everyday couches from Ethan Allen and they still look brand new 4 years later. My experience has been that good couches are one area that you shouldn't buy a cheap brand on. If it is a barely used living room, look on craigslist for a quality brand.

Lady, it is like you are reading my mind!! My husband and I want to replace our couch and loveseat and upgrade to a sectional. It will be our everyday sofa and we need to be able to comfortably seat all of us with room to spare. We throw lots of football parties and we want more spots for people to sit and lounge during the game. This spot also has to stand up to our boys, who eat snacks and whatnot in our living room, and our rambunctious black lab puppy. Our current sofa/loveseat combo is an olive-y green khaki color. So drab!! When we bought it (prechildren) we thought it would hide less dirt and hold up to the messes children make. Fast forward seven years and it is in a sorry state- food and milk stains and water rings OH MY! Our problem is my husband thinks that a white sofa is a bad idea with kids and a dog. He believes that even with a slipcover it will never look nice. I love the fact of being able to throw the slipcover in the wash but I'm not ready to battle it out yet. I love the look of the PB sectional but it is a LOT of money. I have read through all the comments and love all the suggestions your other readers have. I am going to show this post {and all the lovely comments} to my hubbie. Maybe you can also tell us how you convinced your hubbie to go with a white sofa with three children!! ReplyDeleteI have had the ektorp sofa from Ikea for about 8 years now. We could not be more happy with it. We have 3 teen agers and 2 smaller children and it has held up so well. I love that you can wash the covers, I didn't know not to put them in the dryer so I did and they are fine. I still put them in the dryer now. No problems with sagging covers and always looks really nice. My extremely picky husband loves this sofa. I would highly recommend it.

ReplyDeleteHi! We bought our sectional about 5 years ago from Macy's furniture. It is the best couch. It looks a lot like the one you like - we got it in a dark green, but any color can be chosen. We use it like crazy and it still looks great!
ReplyDeleteAlso, we bought a couch with the stripes and it is super tricky!! It is hard having something so big with that pattern. I will now always stick with the solid colors!
Do you have any outlet rooms in the furniture stores out there? We have a local store that just so happens to be the 'drop off' for all their stores in this region. I recently was able to pick up a high end couch in perfect condition for $397. Why? Because it was only one L of a sectional and no one wanted it because the arms did not match. In my case, because the couch was a bit longer than I was originally looking for, I had to put the "sectional" end against a wall and with a side table - you can't even tell they don't match - unless I tell you. Score! There were aisles upon aisles of things on sale - some damages, some just discountinued and prices fall each week if not sold. Hope you can find some place like this - it is worth scoping out anyway.
ReplyDeleteI bought our couches at Sofa Mart - our formal living room is a "trophy" room (my husband went to So Africa on safari), and I bought a micro-suede cream color loveseat and two leopard print chairs. The best part about the loveseat is that it has SHAPE (doesn't look like a baked potato) and because it is micro-suede, I just wipe down any stains on it (I have 4 kids and friends that like to spill red wine)...it still looks brand new. I have the corresponding sofa, chair and ottoman, but they are in olive green and in the family room. The whole set cost me $1700...and still looks new. I can send pix if you want, but need your email. ;)
ReplyDeleteKeep looking and don't settle. If nothing else, set aside the money you would use on a set and save a little more to get the one you love...it will be worth the wait.
Oh, my friend is ECSTATIC to get the vinyl she ordered from you for her daughter's Kitchenaid mixer. If she had told me sooner what her gift idea was, we could have had you make the orange Texas Longhorns vinyl to go on it, but I just clued her in last week! LOL It will be cute with the orange vinyl swirls anyway...

We just recently bought our couch from Ashley Furniture. I'm not sure if they have any where you are located but we have always been satisfied with our couches from there. However, I would say, I have never seen a couch for that cheap unless you are buying a used couch or it's from Ikea. We only saw couches for as low as 1,999. Sorry friend :(
ReplyDeleteWe got ours at Ashley in Layton (I think there's one in SLC too). Someone actually posted a link earlier to the Durapella and we have the exact one except darker and we LOVE it. We got it last year at their presidents day sale for like $300. Hello cheap! Ashley actually sells their furniture to RCWilley so you're getting the same thing but cheaper. And the warranty is included already where RCWilley still charges you extra for it. My 18 month old just this morning grabbed my can of Dr. Pepper and dumped it on my sofa (Grr! Boys!) and the sofa cleaner they gave me took it right out. But if it doesn't come out you can call them and they will come clean it for you and if it STILL won't come out, they'll replace it. We also had some issues with the springs 2 weeks ago and they came right out and fixed it for free! Woot!
ReplyDeleteI have the JCPenny Lindon couch! I'm actually sitting on it right now! We've had it for almost 2 years and it has held up really well. We have it in white and it looks just like my mom's Pottery Barn couch. It's super comfy and looks great. I think I've maybe had about 4 feathers poke out...which isn't too bad for 2 years in my opinion. Let me know if you have any questions!

ReplyDeleteOk, you need to check out jcpenney.com They have a lot of knock off Pottery Barn styles and they have at any given time one, two or three styles of couches just like the white slip-covered ones you want. I've seen them in person and wished I would have bought those instead of the actual pottery barn slip-covered ones i did get. I would have saved thousands. The prices are great there too, I think under a thousand for what you want (and they aren't cheap quality like Ikea)...Good luck, its hard to find nice couches that aren't totally traditional. P.s people will probably think you are crazy for wanting white couches with three kids...I love it and I have twin boys and a little girl...still don't regret it four years later.

ReplyDeleteA sofa - well, I have to say that this was always frustrating for me and my hubby because it just seemed like we could never and I mean neva find a sofa that we liked in our price range (gads finances) until a really good friend told me I was shopping for sofas wrong - um what.. seriously that's what she said to me. I have to admit I questioned why she was my friend at that moment but she quickly told me that for a great sofa in your price range, that you will lourve forever heres what ya need to do.
Look at the bones. Easy peasy - huh - yea I thought the same thing - what? She explained that it was sorta like thrifting and junking - you look at the bones first. Find a sturdy sofa and lay all over it - make sure it feels good to everyone and then slip cover it. Of course you could always go to your local upholstery place and they can redo it for you if you like that option as well. :) I get more comments on how comfy or gor gee ous my sofa us and it cost me - wait for it... wait for it.. $200. :) Yeppers 200 buckeroos :) a hundred for the sofa and a hundred for the most talented slipcover queen seamstress ever. I am hoping to get another slipcover for my birthday - extravagance never felt so good. :)

ReplyDeletethe extra pillows are gray and cream floral and a dark "steel" stripe. It looks green online...but its dark gray. it is soooo comfortable and huge. I am 5'4" and when sitting all the way back, my feet dont touch the ground. if you are wanting to save a little money and still get it, i believe they have interest free financing for 2 years! good luck. i feel your pain!

ReplyDeleteWe bought a white loveseat and couch from there 6 years ago and are still loving it (and we have three little ones.) If something gets spilled on it you can take the covers off and wash them(since ours are white we just bleach the stains out.) AND you can change your slipcovers for another look when you get tired of the white. Like any other furniture after lots of climbing on and sitting on you have to slid the cushions back in place. Ours have held their shape and style very well.

ReplyDeleteI also just had a local girl that i found while browsing blogs - she made me some oh "sofa"bulous white slip covers for my family room for a good deal - much cheaper than buying a new couch. I would seriously get on KSL and find a couch with good bones and have some slips made. I can forward her blog too you if you would like? super cute and super fast!
And white slips are the best, with 2 kids and a dog i can wash/bleach them whenever they are looking a little nasty and they look new again - we will never go back to a regular couch again!

Holy cow! You must have hit a common sore spot...90 comments! OK...so here is my sofa dilemma. I looked for a couch for over 6 years...because I dreamed it in my head but couldn't find one like in my dream. That happens a lot!. So, my living room couches (7 foot and 8 foot) were custom made. I got exactly the size, shape and fabric , Chenille, I wanted. They were more pricey, like $1250 each, but I LOVE them. Everyone loves how comfortable they are. And when they get gross, I take off the pillow covers and throw them in the wash. When I am really tired of them, I will have them recovered. I will have these forever. That's a tip I learned from my mom. Get good quality furniture, and have it recovered every 10 years. I wish I could recommend a shop to get my wonderful couches, but they sadly went out of business and I live in California. Ask a designer who in your area custom makes furniture. Well worth it. There were probably more, I just noticed a couple as I was herding 4 kids to the back without breaking anything :) I saw one price tag was $449.
ReplyDeleteI have the Pottery Barn sofa and I love it. It's the Charleston (that's the one with all the pillows along the back). We also have the chair-and-a-half and the ottoman. Here's the thing: we've had them at least ten years and they are still in awesome shape. About eight years ago I bought the off-white slipcovers (I got them all on Ebay from a lady who shops the PB outlet) because I figured white is the easiest color to keep clean when it comes to couches. It's true! Red wine, THOUSANDS of juice boxes and sippy cup spills, spaghetti sauce, you name it, it's been on my couch. I just unzip the slipcovers and wash them (sometimes I even have to bleach them) and then put them back on. Yes, the furniture cost us a couple thousand, but it's built to last and has held up over ten years through two kids (who I've caught jumping on it more than once), three moves, and I know I'll have it at least ten more years. You get what you pay for...

This post feels near and dear to my heart because my hubby and I just went through the same thing. Love PB and Restoration Hardware, can't afford the price.
ReplyDeleteWe settled on the light cream Friday Slip covered Sectional from JCP home. We got a crazy good deal as it was originally around $3200 and we walked out of the store for around $1400. Not bad at all for a sectional. Once it was delivered though, the RAF Love seat had the wrong slipcover and we had to send it back...3 TIMES!! It became a joke and after I finally got through to customer service, we got it all figured and and she took an additional 20% off. (Seriously a pretty good deal for our trouble). One problem though, the couch is NOT washable. On day 3 of it living with us my kids creamed it with make-up. I thought that it would wash even though the label is dry clean only, but it didn't and the color of the pillow I washed is way lighter. Has to be dry cleaned or it fades Really bad. I dry cleaned the other creamed cushions, and they look good as new but was around $18 just to clean 2 seat slipcovers. We haven't had it that long, so I can't say anything about wear, but it does look nice right now.
I just have to add that we have a Restoration Hardware couch that we got at the outlet and I can just toss it in the washing machine and anything comes right out. I have even used a magic eraser on it. Luv that couch!! I thought that this was what I would be able to do this one from JCP, but it defiantly is not.

ReplyDeleteIn Salt Lake you can always check out the Overstock.com Saturday warehouse sale. Its from 10am-2pm every Saturday. I've bought lots of furniture and other household items (bedding for sure). Hit or miss some weeks, but my last purchase was a chair, ottoman, rug and luggage set and my grand total was under $100. ReplyDeleteIkea stuff almost always looks bad because so many people sit on them daily, so many kids run acrossed them daily, and they are there for people to jump on, thump on, bang up and really test out their quality. Plus they do have QUITE the warranty.
I would go with the Ikea for sure.
But...I was able to snag a sectional from PB downtown 2 years ago for $850. It was their floor model, but wasn't in too bad of shape and I love it. It's been through H and back and the cushions are still super firm! It's that white canvas and let me tell you that when I brought it home- within about 10 minutes, my then 2 year old took a purple crayon to it! YIKES! But I love it...I for sure think they are worth the investment!
Like other commenters, we have the Ikea Ektorp (?) corner sofa (going on 7 years) and it still looks great! We have 2 toddlers and a dog and it has held up really well. Ours is the beige, but the white does have a more crisp and clean look.
ReplyDeleteWe also have the Remo sofa from Macy's (as another reader posted). We got it in the Honey colored microfiber "velvet" fabric. I love the shape, it's comfortable, and it has stood up to my kids (4 & 1) and cats very well so far. (We bought it 6 months ago.) It is very easy to clean, and we paid a bit extra to get the warranty "just incase".

ReplyDeletewe have the white IKEA couch in our living room and I love it. It's not used a ton except for overflow seating when we have get togethers. It's comfy enough. We splurged and bought a PB Pearce Sectional with the everydaysuede in Stone- and I LOVE it!! for a couch that gets a ton of wear and tear from pets, kids, and guests, it is a dream. I know it's not the cute white cotton, but everything wipes off of it with a damp rag. Everything. And I am a huge fan of the white cotton squishy couches. But for us, it's the best of both!
I'm curious if you ever decided on a sofa. I was debating the Ikea Ektorp in white versus the JCPenny Linden street Friday in natural. I am having the hardest time deciding which to get - I need two, so I feel double pressure to choose the right ones. I love the white color and fabric, price and price of additional covers of the Ektorp but don't find it quite as comfortable as the Linden street, BUT just as soon as I thought I decided on the jcpenny ones - I noticed they have a zipper running right up the MIDDLE of the back. Hope anyone who considers the ones from JCPenny notices this before it gets in your home because the floor model is conveniently backed up to other furniture so that you can't see the zipper, and online doesn't show the back! This may work for the arrangement in your home, but it may not - so beware!

ReplyDeleteI got the Ektorp sofa from Ikea dn I love it so far. I've only had it for a month though, so I can't tell ya how long it holds up. I think it looks so floppy in the store because so many people sit on it and who knows how often they switch it out for a new one. When we got ours out of the box, it wasn't floppy at all.

The knife edge in fabric B, linen-cotton blend, ivory color (which is nearly white) is on sale for $1499.00. The bigger sectional is on sale for $1799.00. Remember the details because it is the only style exactly on sale! Happy shopping!

Pottery Barn OUTLET is a great place to shop but I don't think there are any near you. If you want to travel in Indiana I would be happy to personally escort you to my trifecta of shopping: PB outlet, IKEA and Ballard Designs OUTLET. Makes for a fun trip. My friend and I do it about 2-3 times a year. Always fun to see what we can find. My PB kitchen table $175!! No I did not forget a zero. Also be sure to check out home decorators website too.
