It all started with this little table :)
I have had TONS of questions about this "leggy lady."
But most of all, readers want to know exactly what color she is.
I wasn't totally sure, but I did my best to find the closest match. And I think it's safe to say that it's this...
Crystal Aqua, from Valspar
Well just like a lot of you, I also LOVE this color, and wanted to incorporate it somewhere else in our home. It just screams SPRING to me!
Enter in... IKEA.
Yup, an inexpensive IKEA flat woven rug, with skid free backing.
Perfect for my newest Spring project
:)
Here's how I transformed my rug from boring, to
SPRING-TACULAR!
First I taped off the fabric edges, like so, because I wanted to leave those their natural color.
Then I started paintin' away, with some plain ol' Olympic Semi-gloss latex paint.
This process took me a while.
Like about an hour and a half!
The texture of the carpet was a BUGGER to get through, with the paint. And even required a second coat, to get the coverage that I was looking for.
The reason I went with this rug, was because of it's durability and texture. I love how beachy it looked.
second coat down... cheezit and ice water break...
GAH! What THE.....!?
I said I want a beachy LOOK, not for my rug to ACTUALLY look like it has waves IN IT!
:(
phew... problem solved.
:)
Okay, really. If you attempt this, your rug will probably start to curl up funny, due to the amount of wet paint.
I just let it dry overnight with cans and bottles on it, to keep it flat.
No biggie.
. . .
Now for the FUN part!
BRING ON THE CHEVRON!
Yes. It's trendy.
Yes. Everyone is doing it.
Yes.... So am I
:)
For maximum "chevron achievement" ... I recruited the best gal I could think of.
Miss Jen!
I knew I was in good hands.
After printing out a chevron pattern from vinyl, that fit our rug...
I was off to work.
We used these two "vinyl stencils" as a guide, to make sure that our pattern stayed consistent. They didn't necessarily stick to the rug... it just worked well enough to give us a cleaner guideline, as to where we should put the paint, without having to tape everything off.
Once those were in place... on went our color!
We found that a "tapping method" worked the best. So we just loaded up our foam brushes, and went to town.
Being careful NOT to drag the foam brush, especially too much over the vinyl, because then it would lift up, and you would loose that crisp line.
Stick to the tapping and rocking movements, and you'll be fine. :)
Once we finished with one line, we just moved the other vinyl piece up, measured out our 2.5 inches between each chevron, and then painted away!
After we finished my rug, we started in on Jen's.
She picked a really pretty greenish, grayish blue, that matches her kitchen perfectly :)
Once I got the rug home, I couldn't get over the fact that something was missing.
It almost looked TOO good.
Too........ painted???
LOL LOL.
I know. It sounds weird, but it just needed a little "weathering up", so I took my orbital sander to it, and smoothed out all the roughness, and distressed the paint, just a bit.
This caused the original rug color to come through, which actually gave the rug MORE texture!
I LOVED it!
It kinda looks like goosebumps, close up... hee hee
Here's what it looks like in our kitchen, now!
***swoooon***
I love it. It' so fun to have for Spring!
The colors kind of make me think of an Easter Egg. ha!
I'm SO glad I tried this technique.
It was actually pretty rewarding and fun, to paint something that normally you wouldn't. And it's definitely an awesome way to add a custom pop of color to any space.
Oh! And speaking of color ...
Pretty dang close, eh!?
Ooo!!! And check back in a few days to see what else I have created with this fabulous turquoisey-aqua color :) ... It's ADORABLE!
I just can't get enough of my new favorite blue!!!
This looks AWESOME!!! I was going to drop by Ikea tomorrow to pick up the same rug for our kitchen...you've inspired me to make it fun!

ReplyDeleteLove it Shelley! It makes me want to run to IKEA right now. That blue is GORGEOUS!!! Now to figure out where I NEED a rug...
ReplyDeleteLOVE that color!!!!... Did you consider some matt finish clear coat to protect the white color. I admire whie so much but never end up keeping anythign white very long around this place. You are a better woman than I!
ReplyDeleteMaddie

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this! It looks amazing in your kitchen and the colors are fabulous! Nice work! I bookmarked it and will be posting it as a feature on my blog on Saturday. Thanks for the inspiration...and the gumption to do it first!

ReplyDeleteGreat job as always! :)
I'm in love. Right now I have to avoid the whole "make my space look adorable" thing because we are getting ready to pack up and move...ugh! I just need to add this to the long list of projects I want to accomplish...you know, right next to EVERYTHING ELSE ON YOUR BLOG. Haha. (Really - I started making a list and then I realized that 90% of things came from your blog, so I decided to ditch the list and just come back to your blog for all my home improvement projects once we move. Nothing is better than borrowed ideas, right??)
ReplyDeleteOOOOOH. I love it. Do you sell the vinyl to do the project? :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love, the rug!!! Looks like you ladies had fun!
ReplyDeleteSo cool and snazzy! If you love that color you should see what I have done to my niece's house. Check out http://ms-smartie-pants.blogspot.com/2011/01/rest-of-den.html and http://ms-smartie-pants.blogspot.com/2011/01/kitchen-reveal.html. Such a fun color!

ReplyDeleteyou're so crafty! painting a rug?!! whoda thunk it! ;)
Love it! I might have to do this for our porch. I just can't find the perfect (inexpensive) outdoor rug, but I love this idea.
ReplyDeleteOkay, and jealous that you and Jen can work together. Wish my bloggy buddies lived closer.
Brittany
Beautiful. I think you mean "due to the amount of wet paint"
ReplyDeleteSo So So Cute!! I totally wish I had time to do this!!! Someday. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you! Can't wait to meet you on Thursday! :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! I had no idea Jen did chevron-painting housecalls! It really does look fantastic, and I adore the texture that the orbital sander brought. Terrific!
ReplyDeleteI have seen "the painted rug" everywhere. Because I haven't seen or felt one in person, it seems that once the rug was painted that it would not be comfortable to step on. What is the texture of the rug once painted? It's beautiful, love the color!
ReplyDeleteYou seriously need a shop on Etsy and sell these fabulous things you make!!! Esp the rug! LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteLove it girl! I might have to give it a try, I'll be heading to ikea this weekend. No here's a stupid question you wouldn't be able to wash it if needed, right?
ReplyDeleteLooks great and I love the color.
I would love to know the same thing.
DeleteI've found an inexpensive outdoor/indoor rug online at Walmart, and would do this for the kitchen but I know how messy my family can get. Maybe I'll just have to paint a pattern with colors that would hide the stains?
LOVE IT!! Its so pretty and happy!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I'm loving the blue!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is so awesome! I will definitely have to make that my weekend project this weekend. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh my--that is too adorable!! It looks so perfect and I want one! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!! I love it!! How lucky are you to have Jen so close by to help out!!
ReplyDelete{LOVE} this! I, too, am trying to incorporate a soft turquoise into my decor...found some AWESOME quatrefoil pillows at Big Lots...of all places. I haven't moved it into my kitchen much, but I'm liking the rug idea! Great job!!!

It looks great!!! love the colors, and love it weathered up!
ReplyDeleteI have two small ikea rugs waiting for a similar treatment, but they don't have the rubber backing. I'll bet they curl up big time!
This is AWESOME! I want one :P
ReplyDeleteLove it! Ikea hacks are the best.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. When I saw this project, I chuckled with glee. When I was a little girl (about 50 years ago ... really) I wanted a pink rug to match my pink, ticking stripe wallpaper. Well, mom and dad were on a budget so mom found an inexpensive sisal area carpet (fairly large) and she painted that sucker pink. I was in little girl heaven. I think my mom was a before and after gal long before there were even computers, let alone blogs. Your rug is adorable. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am doing our baby's room in aqua-turquoisy..color and love it! I am going to have to give this a try. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! Very do-able, and such a creative way to personalize a rug. I also appreciate your bravery in finishing it off with the orbital sander. Thank you for a bit of inspiration after a tiring day :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is just fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThe colors, the pattern, the tutorial...I love it all!
I must try this very soon!!!
I'm having a give away on my blog to celebrate my 100th post! I hope you'll stop by!
www.forthelove26.blogspot.com
Oh my gosh, it looks amazing! Great job!!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I wanna try this!
ReplyDeleteOH it looks SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Love the color! Do you have to paint the whole thing or could you just paint the chevron pattern?
ReplyDeleteincredible. I love it... i must figure out a way to multiply the rug size and not the headache! looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteGood for you!!! I have been pricing those dang things all over the place, and so far just cannot justify the amount of money for a rug that I think is trendy too. I did a post about it look here last week. But SO cute! I might have to steal your idea :)

Love the way this run turned out, but seriously, how long did it take you to do from start to finish??
ReplyDeleteShelley,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS...the color, design, border, and everything about it!
Thanks for the awesome sanding tip!! I'm about to paint mine soon and will definitely be sanding!!
Very spring!! Loving it! Looks like you two had way more fun making it then I will have trying to attempt it. But it is cute enough to tempt me!
ReplyDeleteWow you did such a great job!! I love the color and the chevron stripes. It's looks perfect in your kitchen! You are awesome!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I totally want to make one!
ReplyDeleteDo you sell (will you consider selling) the pre-made vinyl chevron pattern?
Thanks!
LOVE the color...how creative! It is perfect for spring, it does remind me of an Easter egg!
ReplyDeleteLove that color! If I'm having a hard time seeing something in a different 'light' I picture it in aqua and i love it. lol! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI totally LOVE this Shelley! Thanks for sharing your tip!!! I've been desperately needing a rug for a couple areas in my house...I think IKEA is calling my name =)
ReplyDeleteThis did turn out beautifully! I think I'd have to leave out the white part at my kitchen though, it would be dirty in no time! If only our house would stay clean enough for a white rug... I digress! I want to do this for our beach house as well... hmmmm... Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI never would've thought to distress a rug... but you are right, it is the perfect tweak. Love the colors, it looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your new rug!! The color is great, the chevron pattern is awesome! I've been wanting to infuse some color and pattern into my kitchen, and I'm definitely keeping this project in mind.
ReplyDeleteYou really are creative and obviously on the "cutting edge"! lol...After I read your blog post, I got this one and the first thing that popped up was a little blue stool!!! too funny! Here is the link from today's Shelter blog post(http://shelterinteriordesign.blogspot.com)....
ReplyDeleteand the link to the Etsy store she posted!!

Love that color and it turned out so lovely!
ReplyDeleteI am seeing these pop up all over blog land and I love them!! Might have to give it a try, as we have been looking for a rug for our family room and I can't find what I'm looking for. Great job!! Love that aqua blue color.
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing! Now I have another project to try! LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteShelly,
ReplyDeleteThe thing holding most of us up on this project is the VINYL PATTERN. Please tell us how you made yours and how we can make our own.
PLEASE!
Shelly,
ReplyDeletePlease help us with the VINYL PATTERN! How do we make or get one!
HOLY COW! That's amazing! I definitely do NOT have a creative bone in my body-- I never would have thought of that!
ReplyDeleteReading all these crafting blogs makes me feel like I should hand in my chick card.
LOVE that color! First time here. Beautiful stuff!
ReplyDeleteWoo-hoo!!! You've made me fall in love with that color all over again! That's been the accent color in my neutral home for a couple years now. I was starting to think about mixing things up, but NOT NOW! I want to go paint me an Ikea rug!

Wow! That turned out so good! I am totally loving the chevron pattern right now and I am putting pieces of it everywhere in my home. It is so cheery :) Love that blue. So calming and refreshing. Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteOk, you are amazing! I need your energy. Never told you how amazing the pantry labels are you sent a few weeks back. obsessed. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else i LOVE it! I am wondering though, how does it feel on your toes? I would love to make it for my entry or in front of my sink.
ReplyDeleteHow big is your chevron template?
It's beautiful. You two did such an awesome job on these. Love the idea!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever stenciled seat cushions? I bought some cushions for our patio furniture that could use a little something and I love what you did with the rug!!!
ReplyDeleteoh my HECK! so so sooo cute!!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I live about six hours from an Ikea but am making a trip close to one for Easter. I may have to take an extra suitcase and bring some Ikea loot home with me. =o)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea...I've always wanted to paint a rug but it looked like too much effort...maybe I''l give it a shot. I also have a fetish for chevron stripes...they are the background on my website that is in the works...love!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration.

Really love the rug. Just wondering how "clean-up-able" the rug is, being that it's in the kitchen and all. I don't know about you, but I constantly spill things when I cook.
ReplyDeleteI think we are on the same chevron paint page, I hav been musing about painting a yellow chevron pattern onto curtains...also thank you for posting the paint color. We have been searching for the exact right blue to paint the legs of our farmhouse table and tha is it! !
ReplyDeleteWow!! What a great idea!! Love the colors, great tutorial, easy and inexpensive. You girls are freakin' geniuses! I painted my own chevron pillows a few months ago. You can check them out if you'd like: http://freestylinbeth.blogspot.com/2011/02/sassy-new-couch-pillows.html

I had "stumbled" upon it about 6 weeks ago, and could not remember where I had been!!!Hours of blog stalking :) Thanks to Centsational Girl"s BOTB, here I am, and subscribing today!!! Now, on to the rug!!! INGENIOUS!!! I am going to go to IKEA tomorrow and buy that rug, I hope all these readers don't live near my IKEA so it will be in stock!!!! :)

ReplyDeleteSeriously - what IS it about that soft, turquoise-y color!!?? it's popping up all over my house, too and I am all about the chevron right now, too. Love your rug - I'm definitely going to grab a rug at IKEA next trip and copy you!! Love your blog. I'm a new blogger and loving it :)

Love love love the rug... Your creativity just may be the answer to my problems. (Well not all of them, but those related to floor coverings in my dining room....) Question for you: If I were to do this technique for a dining room rug, do you think that it would withstand chairs scooting in and out? Keeping in mind that I use said dining room chairs about 3 times per year. I'd love your thoughts if you have a sec. -Leslie
ReplyDeleteP.S. Freakin' love your blog!
I can't even get over how impressive this looks. Can you send me some of your patience and creativity?? This is brilliant!
ReplyDeleteGreat project! and now I have a really stupid / clueless question - how did you make the vinyl stencils? did you download a pattern or buy them? I really want to re-create this at home, but know that I won't be able to draw the stencils.
ReplyDeleteLove the rug...but where did you get those skinny containers in your pantry for your cheez its
ReplyDelete(I have been looking for something like those)

Love the rug, so adorable! Do you have any insight into what washing it will be like? Is it machine washable? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration. Once I saw what you did I painted my squishy mat in my kitchen. Check it out here:

Love love love the rug! I was looking for something similar and your post has inspired me to do my own. I love your blog!

LOVE it just like everyone else :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try and find a rug that I can repurpose with this technique!
You have spoken right to my heart...I am totally making a pink one for my girls' room after I make a trip to ikea!
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your rug and I have already bought Egeby for starting my own project. when I went to the local DIY store they told me not to use latex-paint which is suggested for walls. but you should never trust an employee of such markets.. so here is my question: what kind of colour did you use? is it a conventional latex wallpaint?
i live in austria, so I´m not sure if I can find the right paint...
thanks for your great tutorial!
sara
this is genius!!
ReplyDeleteLove the color! I never knew you could paint a rug (i'm pretty new at this). Thanks for the inspiration! Can't wait to try this one out.
ReplyDeleteI highlighted this project on my little blog at http://wadelmat.blogspot.com/ Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog with pinterest and I really really love this idea!! Great post!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day! xo
I love this! What do you cut your vinyl with? I have a Cricut machine, but I'm guessing you used something larger?
ReplyDeleteLove your chevron rug! I'm not too crafty but this seemed easy enough for me to give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteI recently came across your blog-such a cute idea!!! Has the rug withstood wear over time? Just to be sure, did you use regular wall paint?
ReplyDeleteI know this is old and you probably won't see this, but did you watch the Nate show today? THey had a woman on there with the exact same rug as you showing everybody how to do it. It was even the same color!
ReplyDeleteHey! Just wondering about this adorable rug now that youve had it for awhile... How is it holding up with people walking on it and foot traffic? :)
ReplyDeletei guess u could also get a die cutter... http://www.amazon.com/Silhouette-Cameo-Starter-Bundle-USCutter/dp/B0060D1LFO can cut up to 10 feet!... sounds like she might have one of these
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this rug and I had tucked it into the back of my mind to save for the perfect time! Well, I have taken on a lil project now...making over a room for a friend as a surprise. Well, I didn't think we could swing a rug with the budget we are on and then I found this 5x7 navy carpet remnant at Lowe's for $24.98!!! Woo hoo! I instantly thought of you and this rug and was wanting to know a couple things, if you have a second? It is a low pile (residental style) carpet that is soft enough but doesn't have a ton of wiggle room (hope that makes sense!) Do you think painting a stencil on it would be ok? Do you think it would hold up for a living room carpet? I'm just nervous because the solid navy could work and look great, but I was thinking about adding some stripes or chevron like yours would be fun, if you think it is durable enough? I would LOVE your thoughts!!! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this rug that you created!!! So great and I had stuck it in the back of my mind until I had the perfect use for it...which is apparently now! I am making over a living room as a surprise for a friend and we are on a pretty tight budget. We have gotten everything we need except a rug and I thought that the room would end up being rug-less until I spotted a bound 5x7 residential carpet remnant at Lowes for $24.98! Woo hoo!!! It is a low pile rug that could easily be stenciled, but I am worried about how durable it would be in the living room? She also has grandkids that are all over the floor and I was worried that it wouldn't hold up? I could easily just leave the carpet as is and it would still look great...just had really wanted to find a chevron or striped rug for her. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts, if you have a second! Thank you so much!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis chevron rug is totally fabulous! We mentioned you in today’s post about chevrons and zigzags, a trend we can't help but love. Please check it out and keep up the fantastic design.
ReplyDeleteThis rug is super cute, I love the idea! But since it's been a while, I have a questions. How did it hold up? Did the paint chip off at all? Have you needed to touch it up at all? Just curious!
ReplyDeleteThis is my exact question! I am thinking about doing this and want to know how well it has held up now that it has been almost a year.
DeleteGotta Love SCENTSY!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!!!!! Where did you get the stencil?
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!! Where did you get the stencil????
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this tutorial! The rug turned out phenomenal!! Thank you for inspiring me, I'm also getting ready to paint my own rug. The color you chose is great! It's one of my favorite colors ever! I tried to join your blog but it won't let me :( Lets be friends, check out my new blog also. I recently came across your blog and love this rug! Has it held up and how do ou clean it? I was thinking of doing this as our entry rug and it would have lots of traffic.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
this is a great idea! i didnt know you could do that with a woven rug. i know you mentioned already, due to the material of the rug you needed 2 layers of paint. did it not smell? especially because youve painted over a rug, the smell of paint must have lingered

ReplyDeletethis is a great idea! i never knew you could paint on rugs. did you have problems with the paint smell lingering on to the material and was it difficult to clean the rug when it got dirty?

How durable is the latex paint on a rug? I love the looks of it, but I'm scared that it won't last!

I was just curious about one thing? when you paint the rug like that whether whole thing or just some of it...does it cause the rug to be hard and stiff in those places from the paint or does it keep its original texture? can you use any type of paint or just fabric paint??
ReplyDeleteThanks
have one question for you....when you paint the rug it doesnt get hard and stiff from the paint? it keeps its original texture? and can I use just any type of paint or does it have to be fabric paint?

ReplyDeletei have that rug, but the huge size one. mine is so dirty from kids and the sides have rolled up causing a tripping hazard. i was wondering what to do with it. it cost too much to throw out. maybe a paint job will work. but being 3mx4m it might be hard to do a stencil pattern on it :( what do you suggest?
ReplyDeletePretty cool. If you haven't already you should post this at the IKEA Hack website. :-)
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! And fun pics<3
