Twin Room re-Arranging & 2 for 1 Bedskirt

AGAIN :)

Wasn't it just yesterday when we built these beds?
Yes?  Oh good... I thought so. ha!
Well... we were having a little issue, with Miss Jocelynn wanting to STAY on the top bunk... so Cason and I decided to take them apart and try these beds as singles.
One little problem... this room is T-I-N-Y... to say the least!
Literally... two beds, and it's busting from the seams. lol.

Another drawback, after taking these beds apart were these dumb leftover posts.
We had to hammer those suckers in the FIRST time... so needless to say, they aren't going anywhere, if we simply try to pull them out.
I'm pretty sure we'll have to saw them off, and then paint white over them.
If we need to make bunk beds again, we'll just drill some new holes, I guess.

Another thing that was kinda weird, is that these beds, once apart, had TONS of room under them... and sat up REALLY high.  They didn't have any kind of toe kick type board, to anchor the bed... and putting a bed skirt, under the mattress like normal, wasn't working either, because it wasn't long enough... not to mention we only had ONE.
ugh.

So... we got out scissors and a staple gun. LOL

First we cut the IKEA bed skirt in half

And then stretched the bed skirt from one end of the back of the bed, to the other... and just stapled it right to the wood.

Tada!  Easy fix... and MUCH better :)

These bed skirts prove to be great for hiding things too :)
We've been hiding the girls's shoes in these... "now too short"drawers.
One bed has dressy shoes, and one has play shoes.
It's working great so far!

Speaking of storage... since there is absolutely no more room for the girls's dresser, we had to put it in the closet.
I don't know if this is exactly where I'd have it, in a perfect world.
But it works for now. lol

I also added this tiny little table, to basically just hold a lamp, for night-time book reading.

It was a little yellow from sun damage, when I bought it on clearance... so I just put a quick coat of white spray paint on it, to freshin' it up a bit.
Once again, it's probably not my most favorite "fix" for the small space problem, but I already had it, and it works... for now :)

I'm on the hunt for a small yellow, or cute blue nightstand that is wide and tall, but not deep.
LOL... sounds kind of impossible huh?
Might have to build that one. lol.  Shhh... don't tell Cason I said that.

Anyway... I wanted to show you our progress so far.
I have some really fun ideas for decorating these bare walls,
so I'll share some more on that, when we get to it!
:)

This poor room is having an identity crisis. LOL

After... AFTER
(can you do that? LOL)

Or maybe it's owners just can't make up their minds. LOL
I'm sure by this time next year it will be a guest bedroom or something.
ha!

Okay... so anyway, I'm really excited about some stuff coming up on the ol' bloggity-blog.
Friday - My Christmas Decorations! FINALLY! :)
Monday - A fun, easy, inexpensive craft post!
Whoo hoo!

Till then, folks! :)

  1. So I was thinking that maybe you can get a couple of nule posts (I have no idea if thats how thats spelled) sprayed white and drill holes in them the size of the dowels for the corners of the girls beds that way they they are hidden but just slip on/off then there is a cute place to hang something if needed. Or, even cheaper, those cardboard spheres you find at craft stores can be painted white and by cuting an X into it, it will just slide on to hide the dowel.

The room looks lovely by the way, I wish I had a room like that growing up. :)

  3. The room looks great! I love the bed skirt stapled to the wood.

Tiny rooms are so frustrating but you've made it look adorable and functional so you should be very proud :)

  4. How about a small wood finial to cover the pegs?

Can't wait to see your Christmas decor!

  5. The girls' room looks great! If you don't want to saw off those pegs for stacking the beds, you could always add little removable corbels (is that what they're called?) over the top of them. I feel your pain with small rooms but this one looks like it's workin! :)

  6. This turned out great! A suggestion for the pegs...why not add some finials or knobs?? The room looks beautiful! You have some lucky girls:o)

  7. Still cute as ever! You know, maybe you could keep those little post thingys and find a stair final or some type of wooden topper thing (yes all very professional terms), slap some white paint on them, drill a hole to fit on the little post left... and... you have a more finished look that won't be as much work when they get converted back to bunk beds! :)

  8. I love what you have done-we have the same problem with a too small room and two little girls sharing. One thing that made a huge difference was taking the doors off the closet-it made access much easier, even in the corners of the closet. And it just made it seem like an extension of the room rather than a closet. Just an FYI. Great job!

  9. The beds look awesome apart, just as they did as bunks. I a bunkbed like this for my girls! So transitional.
Also, maybe a solution to the dowel/post issue, You could find curtain rod finials OR white painted large wood beads to put over them?
    Just a thought...

  10. I think the room is adorable!

  11. I wouldn't saw off those pegs. I would find some kind of wooden birds (or something like a little wooden bird) and drill and hole in the bottom and plop it over those pegs. viola! No more pegs.

Our bed is super tall so I use two dust ruffles. Thrift stores usually have tons of them in plain old white. I usually buy one that is a size larger than our bed, put that one first, then put one that is the right size for the bed over the top of it. Viola! Long enough ruffle. (Since your beds are against the walls you could just hang the first twin sized on down lower than the second one instead of buying one a size too big.)

But the stapling method works too. :-)

  12. are we sisters? I think I MIGHT change around rooms and stuff as much as you do! It looks really cute, and you lasted longer than me with the bunk beds...I HATE them...my OCD totally kicks in...and they are just too hard to make...well and look as perfect as I want them. LOL!
Hope your bathroom is coming along...I have to tell you I had just finished the slats in my kids bathroom about the same time you announced yours...I wanted to send out a warning call...it was a lot harder, and more expensive than I thought it was going to be...isn't it always? It turned out really cute though (no I haven't posted picture...stupid lighting, I seriously cannot get a decent picture...(I know, I know...totally the photographer) I'm sort of struggling in the blogging dept...I mean I have ideas and projects done and in the works to fill 10 blogs...it's my executuion...Oh and my lack of computer skills (I'm much better with a paint brush) So although it seems I have been absent from the blogging world...I have still been here...checking on you and stuff...just missed commenting! So HI again...who knows, you've probably already forgotten me...LOL! anyway, I know you have comment moderation...so delete all that crap that was just intended for you...haha! maybe next time I'll just email you...haha again...OK, I'm a dork, logging off.

  13. Super cute, even though it is lacking in space! I love it and I'd love to know how you made the beds, did you use knockoffwood or did you guys come up with it on your own? Also a little idea for the posts, what if you put some decorative knob or doorknob or something over it and then if you did decide to make them bunk beds again all you had to do was pull it off? I can't wait to see more!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You have such great style! How much room do two little girls need anyway? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think the beds look great! And brillant bedskirt idea! What if you found some round finals or something for those rods sticking out... We have the same problem with our girls (4 and 6). Two twin beds trying to fit in a 9x10 room... I finally put in a closet organizer (just a simple closetmaid one). Two hanging rods on both sides and shelves down the middle. Then I took out their dresser completely. It's worked out great for us! Hoping to do it for our boys' room, which when they're older (2 and 7 months now), we'll be faced with the same problem...

  16. The room looks wonderful. I LOVE LOVE that Green and White Christmas Decoration. Is that some wonderful vinyl you offer?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Love the simplicity of the room! i have also been known to staple the dust ruffle on. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. The rooms looks great and almost identical to my girls room. Why do builders make such small rooms..maybe it's so we can be creative. Love the girls bedding!

I am SO excited for FRIDAY! I can hardly stand it! :0

  19. Oh, I like it with the beds down. Great thinking ~ stapling the ruffle on...mine is always sliding around.

  20. Just a suggestion for the closet, a friend of mine had a similar situation and she took the doors off, painted a contrasting color inside the closet and up curtains. I believe she used a spring loaded shower rod so no holes in the door frame.
Also, I know of this fantastic little furniture store in Lindon called Four Chairs...such cute stuff, I'm sure you could find a cute table there. Anyway, love your blog, keep it up.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Love it! So clever with the bedskirt...all kinds of stuff can get hidden down there now! We have the same issue...tiny room. Right now the girls' bunks are bunks, but I've been contemplating what you've done...I love change! Keeps things fresh and fun.

  22. A friend of mine took the doors off the closet, painted a contrasting color inside, put up a spring loaded shower curtain with cute curtains and it really opened up the space. Also, there is the cutest furniture store in Lindon called Four Chairs Furniture, I bet you could find a cute table there. Just some suggestions...
Love your blog and your ideas!

  23. When is the next Master Bathroom/Bedroom post? I am trying to be patient ;) pleeeeeeeaaasse HURRY!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have an idea for your weird dowels sticking out on your footboards! Maybe you could take large round wooden balls, drill holes in the bottom so they fit snug, and spray paint them white! Then, if you ever put them together, they are still functional, and cute for now! :) LOL, just an idea! Your stuff is adorable! Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would think you could find finials to put on those posts. The room looks really cute!

    ReplyDelete
  26. How ingenious on so many levels. I think it turned out great with the amount of space you have! And I love the colors you've used.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We just took our girls bunk beds apart too.......we are going to find some finials or something to put on top of the dowels.

    ReplyDelete
  28. hey..so the room looks great! So one idea I came up with to cover the bunk bed "sticks" is to get some finials... I am sure you could find some cute bird ones from pottery barn.. or since we live in utah.. rod works or maybe tai pan.. just an idea so you don't have to cut them..??

    ReplyDelete
  29. You should make some rose balls and put them over the pegs at the ends of the beds!! That way they are covered up, AND if you ever want to turn them back into bunk beds, you still have your pegs!! Just a thought!

    ReplyDelete
  30. You just need finials for those ugly wood posts. You will amaze us with something fabulous no doubt! I still can't believe you made the beds. What can't you do??? Love ya!

    ReplyDelete
  31. just a suggestion, but what about finials for the beds over the post.

  32. I think the room looks gorgeous. Perhaps knobs or something could be put over the little posts.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just came to suggest maybe putting finials on the end posts of the girls' beds, but I see that it's been suggested already. I think you could come up with something really pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I see everyone beat me to it, but I vote for finials as well, that way the posts are still there if you decide to put the beds back together as bunks. I like the change, and storage underneath is perfect for shoes or out of season items.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh Shelley! that room is gorgeous! Really, could you fly to MA and help me decorate my house...pretty, pretty please?

and can I just let out a little squeal of delight? Can't wait to get my hands on that cute Christmas subway art...i just have.to.have.it!

  36. I am literally obsessed with this room! I want to do that exact wainscotting/bead board and I have no idea where to find it. All I can find is the kind with the small lines all over it. Please help! I love this room!!

  37. i LOVE your blog. the girls room is darling. what a fantastic idea about the dust ruffle! don't you just love a staple gun?!

looking forward to your Christmas ideas!!

  38. I love their room and that is a great idea for the bedskirt!

  40. I absolutely love it, it's adorable! You did a fantastic job on this room, and I love the way it's changed from the beginning through the baby-phase to now. Love it!

  42. I think it looks great! We just recently bunked our two. :) Love the idea of using under the bed storage for shoes!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. You could just buy, paint and drill holes into finials and then plop them on top of the dowels. It would be the perfect finishing touch to the room!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, you have a lot of comments, but on the crazy chance that you actually have enough time to read all of these, I will also add my two cents.... The beds are so totally cute, and it was evident that your girlies loved the change as well, I am guessing from the exuberant bed jumping! They are so cute, way to keep things interesting and fun. I love projects around the house, I just finished my daughters room a bit ago, feel free to come on over and check it out, alpinepoppy-Sarah.blogspot.com. Jen from tatertots and jello helped me with it, she is the best! I am determined that the three of us need to be beast friends, just saying' ;)

  45. So yes I see tons of othe people have already said it but the second i read your post and saw the pics I thought about putting knobs over those pieces.. Dress them up and make them looks girly and cute and they can add a lil flare to the room.. I think it would be a really cute little thing to do.. Aimee

  46. What an adorable room! You know you can just buy finials at either the blue or the orange box (small wooden ones - they come in sets of 2 for about $3 per set), remove the screw to create a hole and after spray-painting them white simply slip them over your dowl ends. Easy-peasy and cute to boot!

  47. Wow - still very classy! Love it.

  49. The colors in that bedding is scrumptious.

What about putting up shelves between their beds?

Depending on what is behind their closet, you could build niches between the studs to gain some storage.

  50. This is too funny. My boys share a room but the kiddo in the top bunk gets "too hot" - so after months of him complaining, I threw his mattress on the floor. :) Problem is, we'd have to literally saw our bunk beds apart. I'm not opposed, but still debating. Hmm. Also, I DESPISE bedskirts. Hate them suckers! I throw them all away. But now, how smart is it to staple them to the bed frame (if possible?)??? Oh good glory! What an idea. You guys are so smart! Also again, I love dressers in closets. I don't do it, LOL, but I love it!!!! :) Ok. I'm done now. Happy weekend! :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. So cute! NO....don't cut off the dowels, just find some cute finials and stick them on there. That way you still have options of using them as a bunk system again. Besides, finials would totally give it a cute look! You could even personalize them somehow to each of the girls!

  52. Love what you did with the twin room. I had the SAME leftover posts issue. My husband just found 4 round wooden balls, panited them drilled a whole in each one and just placed them over the posts. easy fix... It turned out really cute!!

  53. Love the twin s room. We had the same problem with the leftover posts. My husband found 4 round balls, painted them white and drilled a long hole in each one. They slipped right over the post. It was an easy fix and way cute!

  54. We have an itty bitty room here too. If you can make yours look fantstic....I can do the same to ours! You are so inspiring!

And maybe you could use some vintage door knobs on those leftover posts. Good luck!

  55. As usual, it is adorable. Can you tell me where you got the bedding? It is so pretty.

  56. Love, love, love their bedroom!

If I had a little girl, I so want her room to look like this! I'd also like to know where you got the quilts from. They are such a lovely pink!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just an idea for the dowels that stick up on both the beds. You could purchase some matching finials and drill holes just a wee tad larger than the dowels and slide the finials over them. That way you could still have the dowels in case you want to use the beds as bunkbeds again.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love getting twin inspiration from you! This room is adorable. You MADE those beds? THey are awesome. I too have identical twin girls (3 yrs) and a singleton (boy, 6 yrs) so I am especially interested in your blog. You do "girly" so right.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love your style! I showed my daughter your girls rooms, and now she wants me to redo her room. I cant find any bedding that I love, other then the bedding you used in the twins room. Where do you find all your cute stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love their room, also I really like the walls. Did you do a separate post on the walls? I would love to see how you did them. Thanks!

  61. Just fabulous! I linked your lovely room to my childrens rooms post today, too good to not share!!

  62. So I know this is an old post.. sorry but I am curious.

Where did you get the twins bunk bed? My girls want new ones and I've been searching for ones just likes these. *they too have a super tiny room and single beds just wont work..*

  63. I love the girls bedroom. I have a question about your light, I bought the same one and need it shorten like how you did it.....my guy doesn't seem to believe me that it can be done so I was hoping you could tell me how you did it...thanks
