AGAIN :)
Wasn't it just yesterday when we built these beds?
Yes? Oh good... I thought so. ha!
Well... we were having a little issue, with Miss Jocelynn wanting to STAY on the top bunk... so Cason and I decided to take them apart and try these beds as singles.
One little problem... this room is T-I-N-Y... to say the least!
Literally... two beds, and it's busting from the seams. lol.
Another drawback, after taking these beds apart were these dumb leftover posts.
We had to hammer those suckers in the FIRST time... so needless to say, they aren't going anywhere, if we simply try to pull them out.
I'm pretty sure we'll have to saw them off, and then paint white over them.
If we need to make bunk beds again, we'll just drill some new holes, I guess.
Another thing that was kinda weird, is that these beds, once apart, had TONS of room under them... and sat up REALLY high. They didn't have any kind of toe kick type board, to anchor the bed... and putting a bed skirt, under the mattress like normal, wasn't working either, because it wasn't long enough... not to mention we only had ONE.
ugh.
So... we got out scissors and a staple gun. LOL
First we cut the IKEA bed skirt in half
And then stretched the bed skirt from one end of the back of the bed, to the other... and just stapled it right to the wood.
Tada! Easy fix... and MUCH better :)
These bed skirts prove to be great for hiding things too :)
We've been hiding the girls's shoes in these... "now too short"drawers.
One bed has dressy shoes, and one has play shoes.
It's working great so far!
Speaking of storage... since there is absolutely no more room for the girls's dresser, we had to put it in the closet.
I don't know if this is exactly where I'd have it, in a perfect world.
But it works for now. lol
I also added this tiny little table, to basically just hold a lamp, for night-time book reading.
It was a little yellow from sun damage, when I bought it on clearance... so I just put a quick coat of white spray paint on it, to freshin' it up a bit.
Once again, it's probably not my most favorite "fix" for the small space problem, but I already had it, and it works... for now :)
I'm on the hunt for a small yellow, or cute blue nightstand that is wide and tall, but not deep.
LOL... sounds kind of impossible huh?
Might have to build that one. lol. Shhh... don't tell Cason I said that.
Anyway... I wanted to show you our progress so far.
I have some really fun ideas for decorating these bare walls,
so I'll share some more on that, when we get to it!

So I was thinking that maybe you can get a couple of nule posts (I have no idea if thats how thats spelled) sprayed white and drill holes in them the size of the dowels for the corners of the girls beds that way they they are hidden but just slip on/off then there is a cute place to hang something if needed. Or, even cheaper, those cardboard spheres you find at craft stores can be painted white and by cuting an X into it, it will just slide on to hide the dowel.

The girls' room looks great! If you don't want to saw off those pegs for stacking the beds, you could always add little removable corbels (is that what they're called?) over the top of them. I feel your pain with small rooms but this one looks like it's workin! :)

You know, maybe you could keep those little post thingys and find a stair final or some type of wooden topper thing (yes all very professional terms), slap some white paint on them, drill a hole to fit on the little post left... and... you have a more finished look that won't be as much work when they get converted back to bunk beds! :)
ReplyDeleteI love what you have done-we have the same problem with a too small room and two little girls sharing. One thing that made a huge difference was taking the doors off the closet-it made access much easier, even in the corners of the closet. And it just made it seem like an extension of the room rather than a closet. Just an FYI. Great job!

I wouldn't saw off those pegs. I would find some kind of wooden birds (or something like a little wooden bird) and drill and hole in the bottom and plop it over those pegs. viola! No more pegs.
ReplyDeleteOur bed is super tall so I use two dust ruffles. Thrift stores usually have tons of them in plain old white. I usually buy one that is a size larger than our bed, put that one first, then put one that is the right size for the bed over the top of it. Viola! Long enough ruffle. (Since your beds are against the walls you could just hang the first twin sized on down lower than the second one instead of buying one a size too big.)
But the stapling method works too. :-)
are we sisters? I think I MIGHT change around rooms and stuff as much as you do! It looks really cute, and you lasted longer than me with the bunk beds...I HATE them...my OCD totally kicks in...and they are just too hard to make...well and look as perfect as I want them. LOL!

Super cute, even though it is lacking in space! I love it and I'd love to know how you made the beds, did you use knockoffwood or did you guys come up with it on your own? Also a little idea for the posts, what if you put some decorative knob or doorknob or something over it and then if you did decide to make them bunk beds again all you had to do was pull it off? I can't wait to see more!

ReplyDeleteI think the beds look great! And brillant bedskirt idea! What if you found some round finals or something for those rods sticking out... We have the same problem with our girls (4 and 6). Two twin beds trying to fit in a 9x10 room... I finally put in a closet organizer (just a simple closetmaid one). Two hanging rods on both sides and shelves down the middle. Then I took out their dresser completely. It's worked out great for us! Hoping to do it for our boys' room, which when they're older (2 and 7 months now), we'll be faced with the same problem...

Oh, I like it with the beds down. Great thinking ~ stapling the ruffle on...mine is always sliding around.
ReplyDeleteJust a suggestion for the closet, a friend of mine had a similar situation and she took the doors off, painted a contrasting color inside the closet and up curtains. I believe she used a spring loaded shower rod so no holes in the door frame.

ReplyDeleteI have an idea for your weird dowels sticking out on your footboards! Maybe you could take large round wooden balls, drill holes in the bottom so they fit snug, and spray paint them white! Then, if you ever put them together, they are still functional, and cute for now! :) LOL, just an idea! Your stuff is adorable! Love your blog!

ReplyDeleteYou should make some rose balls and put them over the pegs at the ends of the beds!! That way they are covered up, AND if you ever want to turn them back into bunk beds, you still have your pegs!! Just a thought!

You know you can just buy finials at either the blue or the orange box (small wooden ones - they come in sets of 2 for about $3 per set), remove the screw to create a hole and after spray-painting them white simply slip them over your dowl ends. Easy-peasy and cute to boot!

Depending on what is behind their closet, you could build niches between the studs to gain some storage.
This is too funny. My boys share a room but the kiddo in the top bunk gets "too hot" - so after months of him complaining, I threw his mattress on the floor. :) Problem is, we'd have to literally saw our bunk beds apart. I'm not opposed, but still debating. Hmm. Also, I DESPISE bedskirts. Hate them suckers! I throw them all away. But now, how smart is it to staple them to the bed frame (if possible?)??? Oh good glory! What an idea. You guys are so smart! Also again, I love dressers in closets. I don't do it, LOL, but I love it!!!! :) Ok. I'm done now. Happy weekend! :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! NO....don't cut off the dowels, just find some cute finials and stick them on there. That way you still have options of using them as a bunk system again. Besides, finials would totally give it a cute look! You could even personalize them somehow to each of the girls!

Just an idea for the dowels that stick up on both the beds. You could purchase some matching finials and drill holes just a wee tad larger than the dowels and slide the finials over them. That way you could still have the dowels in case you want to use the beds as bunkbeds again.
