Where are you Spring?

{I think I can, I think I can...}

Did you see my lovely, uplifting comment on facebook yesterday? (rolling my eyes)

It's sad... but true... (name that movie)

I am running a trillion miles an hour, and when I crash in my bed at night,
or at 3am...
I look over at Cason and say:
"Why haven't we TOUCHED our bathroom re-do in 2 months?"
or
"Weren't we going to start repainting the basement?"
lol.

Definitely NOT looking for sympathy comments here, I'm just stating the facts.
Being a "school Mom" is hard!  It's like a whole different life.
Back and forth, to and fro... Sign this paper, register this kid, get me new shoes, I have to read this book.
AH!
Don't get me wrong... I LOVE my kids at this age, and wouldn't go back to the,
"Changing diapers, warming up bottles, spit-up on my carpet" phase of my life...
But I think I'm finally figuring out, that even though I THOUGHT my sweet kiddos going to school would be so much easier... it proves that...
Life never gets easier... It just changes.
LOL.  Can I get an AMEN?

okay... enough of that.
Onto some fun pictures. :)

Look who I brought home last week!
She's far from done, but she looks oh-so-purdy in her new coat of white :)

I still need to spend some time in our garage, sanding her down, and giving her some more character... then after a few coats of poly, it's onto DECORATING! whoo-hoo! :)
ps.  If you don't know me well... the "decorating part" is the actual reason that I go through the whole...
"rip it down, build it up, repaint it" crap.

Although, most of the days our garage acts as the "bike track" for freezing, snowed in kids.
lol.
Seriously, how sad is this?
my girls:
"Mom?  Will you back your car out of the garage, so we can ride our bikes in a small circle?"

ah!  SPRING! WHERE ARE YOU!?

Riding bikes, cutting wood, and painting furniture has GOT to get done around here!
And these below freezing temps just AREN'T in the plans...!

  1. Cute little cabinet, and AMEN to everything else. Up here in SE Idaho it's been -10 to -20 the last couple days and I'm just about ready to jump ship. I think it's hilarious that your girls ride their bikes in the garage -- talk about making the best of a yucky winter situation ;) I've had the least productive, in a funk week ever, so I hear you about the rut... you are definitely not alone!!

  2. I totally understand! We have so many projects going at once that I don't even no where to start!! Too cute the girls riding their bikes in the garage. We rode ours in our basement when I was kid living in NY!!

  3. I think my FB status said pretty much the same thing as yours did... you are not alone mama. P.S. I totally get into the whole DIY thing too, for the finale... DOT DOT DOT "THE DECORATING" its what brings all the fab-u-lou-sity together. Hope you get more spunk in your step today. winks- jen

  4. Amen, sister!! I love the winter, but it is holding back my projects, too!!

  5. We know how you feel! I think it's just the winter blues. I think everyone needs a tropical get-away this time of year :) Beautiful Sofa Table by-the-way. I search and search for these kind of thing, but just never seem to find them. My next mission-bedside tables. At least the weekend is coming up. Happy day to you :)

  6. I am new to your Blog and am loving it! I do have to say it really never does get any easier, lol. I have three boys, 8,10 and 12 they are all in school but wow I feel more busy now than ever. Next year they will be in 3 different schools- (this year its 2)yikes!
But I am loving your home! Makes me want to change everything in my house, lol!!!

  7. Oh, your post today is "right on". I think all of us are having a tough time right now. I have hit a creative zero. . . and no motivation. So much to do and I want spring. But you know Utah weather and it could be a long time before it comes. Hang in there, this too shall pass! By the way I love your blog.

  8. I feel exactly the same way. I had 2 kids 20 months apart and I couldn't wait for them to start school. Aaaahh, I thought I would be so free. Not only did that not necesarily happen due to scouts, dance lessons, homework, reading etc, I went and had another child. :) The joys of motherhood. I wouldn't change it. But that doesn't make it any less challenging!

  9. Nothing wrong have your own personal pity party...we all do it from time to time! Now for that new piece of furniture...love it! Can't wait to see how it looks all decorated!

  10. Little Mermaid quote, right?!? Love the latest painted piece!

    ReplyDelete
  11. What kid of poly do you use on white paint jobs? I've tried SO many types and all of them yellow the paint!

    ReplyDelete
  12. LOVE your blog girl! I am totally with you on the zero motivation, so many things I want to make/do, just no get up and go!!
School is awesome, it's fun to see the kiddos learn and grow, but I would take little house on the prairie type days any day! Days when they just go in the winter cause there is nothing super fun to do outside as a family, know what I mean?

  13. I hear ya! Yesterday it was 50 degrees here in OH, at 9 a.m. At noon it dropped down to below 30!! What in this world?!? I am sooo ready for spring. I need to give my changing table a second coat of Kils White and I would like to give my entertainment unit the same TLC. I started that project in the summer and it starting getting frigid before I knew it! Aah!

    ReplyDelete
  14. AMEN to the first part of your post. Being cold all the time and all the bleakness of winter puts me in a funk. So many projects to get done and so little motivation to get moving on them.
AND...your table is awesome! Can't wait to see how you "decorate" it.
Have a great week and just know that probably A LOT of people are struggling with the blues of winter.

    Soooo looking forward to spring!!!

  15. Love the side table. That comment about your kids riding in circles had me laughing out loud.

  16. I totally understand that. My unfinished basement is the track at the moment, but I still don't want to do things down there while my little one plays. I'm ready for some warm weather so I can get some painting projects done too without freezing or warming up the garage!! Can't wait to see what you come up with for you're new beaut!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I hear you loud and clear! I thought it would be easier once they went to school too. Not so much! But hang in there. They DO get more independent, and now I am trying to hold onto some of the simpler younger days. They go so fast!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am so over this winter. I'm ready for spring as well. It has snowed so many times here that each time the plow comes our driveway gets smaller and smaller. Right now my husband can't even get out of his garage without ten maneuvers. I'm calling it the winter blues.

  19. A quick question. Did you build the shelfs in your kitchen where you have your Halloween and Christmas decor? If so, do yo have a tutorial on your blog for them?
    P.S
I read your blog alot and now have a list a mile long of projects for my honey!

  20. love the newly painted furniture and yeah, funny pic....but I hear you about winter can now say goodbye!!!

  21. So, guess whose smiling face I saw on the Nate Show this morning? How exciting (in a round about way) for you. :-)

  22. Life never gets easier... It just changes.

    You've got an AMEN, Sista!

Your sofa table looks beautiful so far.

On those too cold to play outside days it's amazing what a bunch of blankets and some kitchen chairs can become in a child's mind -- a tent, a secret club house ...

  24. I give a sort-of Amen. :-) If there are any new moms with itty-bitty newborns who actually can find time to read your post, they should know that it _does_ get easier. The rest of us do occasionally get a shower by ourselves and finish a project more than once a year. After that? Yeah, I'd agree it probably never gets easier, just different. At least it seems that way so far, five years into motherhood. But nicer weather sure does help with motivation.

  25. Yep, spring, where are you really? All of December we had -30 C or so (about -22 F). Then it started snowing. Really snowing. And now we have 70 cm of snow (about 27 inches). We had to clear the roof of snow for safety reasons (it can only hold so much) and now we are not able to see out of our bedroom window for the huge pile of snow in front of it... Anyone ever thinking about visiting Finland: do not come in the middle of winter.
The sidetable looks like it's going to turn out great, by the way!

  26. im totally ready for spring!!! so sick of the cold weather.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Amen! (you asked for it)
And at least your girls want to DO something. My kids just get sucked into the T.v. and I can't blame them- it's TOO cold!

  28. I'm impressed that just moving the car out of the garage provides all that empty space! I'm sorry to say that my thrifting "spring time projects" and after-Christmas clearancing has taken over the half of the garage that I don't park in.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nah you aren't the only one. It is the freezing cold weather. Maybe your pipes that pump your creative juices are just frozen. They will thaw soon enough and you will be back on track!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Fear not, you aren't the only one. Schools back today for my oldest after 7 odd weeks of summer holidays and it was ME counting how many sleeps there were to go. Just 3 more sleeps to go until the youngest starts kinder.

REALLY like your new project and looking forward to the finished item ;)

  31. Hang in there girl! You are amazing and awesome and so inspiring! And you are an awesome mom for backing the car out so they can ride in a small circle! Because you know they are super happy to just be riding!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You really are just so cute! Reading your posts feels like talking to a friend. Hang in there. It gets easier in about 10 years!

  33. 1st of all...AMEN!

  35. Being a Wisconsin-ite, I used to do this when I was a kid! Only it wasn't back the car up (dad took our only car to work, in the 80's) it was start a FIRE in the woodstove so we can ride bikes, or roller skate, or play darts! Funny how we made do, isn't it?
Actually, I recall having a birthday party, in March, in the garage so we could all roller skate! Funny...

  37. AMEN!!! I am currently at almost every stage with a high schooler, middle schooler, 3 in elementary, one in preschool, and a one year old. I'm only lacking a college student and grandkids at this point. So on top of it all, I am still cleaning up baby messes and I am also staying up until 1 or 2 doing Algebra II! Believe it or not, I really do LOVE MY LIFE! Chaos is great.

BTW, I just got your cute "Love Birds" in the mail and stuck it on a plate right away!!! It's so fun! Thanks a bundle!

  41. I know what you mean, having kids in school is like another job! it goes very fast though. THAT BUFFET IS GORGEOUS! I'm on the hunt for a piece like that for my kitchen. I'll be looking forward to seeing it all dressed up.

  42. hi, Shelley! I'm a new follower and I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for sharing your lovely home! My home's building style and layout is very similar to yours. I've always thought I couldn't do certain things in my home because it didn't fit the style of the house. So even though I LOVE wainscoting and picture mold and wing back chairs, I thought I couldn't have those things because they didn't "go." Thank you for showing me how wrong I've been!

on a side note, my maiden name is Smith and I got ridiculously excited to see another Shelley Smith in the world :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. yeah, you are so right about the school thing. i remember when i was a *ahem* "younger" mother, some of the "older" momstelling me that life didn't get magically easier just because your kids are in school. i totally thought they were lying...until this year, when for the first time in 11 years, ALL of my kids were in school everyday. ALL day. and yeah, there are a TON of things that ARE easier, but HOLY CRAP, it's HARD to keep up with three kids homework schedules, and their reading minutes and the permission slips and the projects....AKKK. i'm stressing myself out just thinking about it.
but seeing your girls ride their bikes in the garage is sooo cute. my por garage could be featured on HOARDERS right now, and the freezing temps are basically ensuring that it's gonna look like that for a WHILE.
    stay warm!!
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh, it turned out fabulously! Can't wait to see it fully done and decorated! And don't worry... you'll get stuff done. Just breathe!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Amen Sister...I feel your pain! Especially, when I have to scrape the snow and ice from my car, while the unfinished, unpainted 'projects' are housed in my garage. And, let's not talk about the unfinished bathroom paint job that I started several months ago and have yet to finish...~sigh~

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've got an amen for ya! I can't finish my projects to save my life! I'm having either severe ADD, or I have something called "kids." Or maybe I have both. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hahaha! Good to know what to expect. I am DEFINITELY in the changing diapers phase...my baby threw up on my rug just today. And it's pretty tiring, but I actually can't get enough of my chubby babies! I love that white table! Great job painting it. PS I can't wait to meet you at Creative Estates!

  49. Hi Shell!

We all need some sympathy now and then. If you ask me...you are a rock star! I don't know how you get it all done.

Take care of yourself...people will understand.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You hit the nail on the head.It doesn't get easier-it just changes. Although, when all 3 are in school all day-it really is fab! You have the opportunity to get some done! (notice I said opportunity, it doesn't always happen. I agree-the below temps are sucking the life out of me! I need to spray a couple of things. Only a couple-a 40 degree day would be heaven sent. Who am I kidding-I take anything above freezing.I love your new piece. Love the details and I want it! SOO cute!

  51. it's not just you, girl! the weather stinks, energy is zapped (need some solar therapy!), the kids are bored with their indoor activities, and now suddenly i'm noticing dust/dirt on the blinds and fans and windows.... what the heck is this? spring cleaning on top of the regular cleaning that i'm already not excited about!? and, with kids in school, saturday is the only day for family things to get done! but, i'm just trying to relax, focus on what's necessary, and let stuff go. it's a learning process, but it's helping. :) hang in there! spring is just around the corner! (kinda.) :)

  52. yay! looks so pretty! The detail shows so well :-).....
side note: I have one of those stupid air vents in my floor in a crummy place as well.....I changed it out to match the carpet and magically.....it went AWAY! hee hee!......love your blog Shelly!
We've all got the winter blahs...no worries!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I LOVE that piece! cant wait to finish our renovations and finally get some nice furniture in this house!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just wait! It gets worse as the kids get older! Imagine 3 kids on 3 different sports teams, at 3 different schools all at the same time!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I so hear you on this post. You are exactly right- it never gets easier, just different. When they are alittle older you'll spend all your time driving them to lessons, school activities, attending their school concerts and performances, sports matches, etc. (you probably already do some of that) and then when they get even older you'll worry every minute that their not home. Now I have one about to leave for college and that's a whole new set of worries. I'm sure I'll worry nonstop for 2 years when they're on their missions (but I'll be happy they went :) Anyhoo, I used to think when they were babies/toddlers, oh I can't wait until this is easier, and physically it is but it's more worrisome I guess. Oh, and the other sad thing is- then you get older and don't have as much energy anymore either! Ok, not to be a bummer here, I love being a parent but it's hard, and it doesn't get easier. After seeing our parents as we all get older, I realize even when they leave home it's not easier either because you still worry about them, and now you have their kids to think about as well!
So, the other thing is- I so agree about the winter. I have so many projects I can't finish until it gets warmer. Right now there is over 3 feet of snow on the ground at our house. I really need boxes and stuff out of my storage shed, but I literally can't even open the door and carry stuff across the yard right now b/c theres so much snow. And I need to be able to spray paint stuff!! Can't do that, or clean out my garage until snow melts, or finish painting the outside of our house. Let's just hope it's an early spring this year because it's been one heck of a winter!
    (sorry about the book-like comment!)

  56. That sideboard/sofa table looks amazing! I have a question for you...what do you use to seal your white furniture? I had a friend tell me that the polyeurthaine she used turned her white pieces yellow. I would be crushed if that happened knowing I had to re-do it!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I just had to comment today to ask if you might reside in Herriman. The house across the street is so similiar to my son and DIL's house. Hey and kids gotta do what kids gotta do even if it means riding in the garage right now.

  58. Girl - don't.I.know.it!!! With one in 2nd, another in K and LuLu getting ready for preschool - life is crazy!!Throw 2 of them in sports and it there you have my life broken up into chunks of time between driving people places.

It's been so cold I haven't even wanted to leave the house...it's miserable! I'm looking for a quick cute craft I can do this weekend to make me feel better.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ok seriously I just love your blog. You are just real and I love that. What you said about life is so true, and I'm learning that lesson right now too. So thanks for helping me know that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

And I want spring to be here too!! :)

  63. I just have to say (out of everything in your post!) I laughed when I saw the kids riding bikes in a circle in your garage. My daughter does the same thing. Amazing, right? Only she only gets 1/2 the space, since the other 1/2 is full of . . . um, stuff, including baseboard we need to install (but have had for about a year.)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Don't you hate winter? Maybe this will cheer you up. Did you catch the brief glimpse of yourself on the Nate Berkus show? When he showed Kate's house from the Centsational Girl blog, there was a brief shot of her blog on the day that you did your guest post. How does it feel to be on national TV?

Here is the link to the segment:

  66. Oh I hear ya girlfriend! I wanna get to my paint projects...but with no garage I'm kinda outta luck until the sunshine comes back into town! Ugh...this nursery has GOT to get finished already!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Amen to that! The older they get the busier they get and then the busier we get!! It is fun though and I wouldn't trade it either. :) Love the table is gorgeous so far! I can't wait to see what more you have in store for it. I am thinkin' Spring right along with you!!
