A few weeks ago on our Instagram feed I posted this picture of my master bedroom nightstand, and got a bunch of you asking questions, so I wanted to make sure to get them answered for ya.
First things first, the mirror was a Target clearance score from a few months ago, the white lacquered frame is from Zgallerie, the "awesomer" print inside was a design I created using the Rhonna Designs App, and the gold and glass, triple decker jewelry case was something I picked up at HomeGoods, for about $20. I'm not sure what it's "suppose" to be used for, but it's PERFECT for all of my rings, earrings and bracelets!
Now for the biggest question asked... "I see a brass lamp in the corner. Where's it from and show me more!" Ha! Okay, so yes, we DID switch out the bedside lighting in our master bedroom, to these really awesome antique brass, plug in wall sconces from Pottery Barn.
There are three main sources of light in our master bedroom. 1- the natural light from the window, during daylight hours of course. 2- light from the lamps that sit on our nightstands, and 3- the ceiling fan/light combo up above us. Obviously natural light from our windows is ideal, but when it's darker out, we are left with only options 2 & 3.
I don't know what our problem was 5 or 6 years ago when we were picking out ceiling fans, but sheesh, we were strugglin', that's one thing I know for SURE!
The fan/light fixture in this space, much like our other one that we switched out in the living room, has never been my favorite. We used to have a black bed, so we thought a black fan was a smart choice at the time, but in reality, it sticks out like a sore thumb against our white ceiling and the light that it provides is just subpar. So... yet again, we're on the hunt for a new ceiling fan, because Cason insists he can't sleep without one. There go my dreams for a cool ceiling-mount chandelier of some sort in this space. boo!
But when it all came down to it, Cason and I had both agreed that we would MUCH rather have the free space on the nightstands, for decor and other necessities, so the lamps were outta there.
Don't worry though, we have other plans for them :)
We weren't set on ordering lights from Pottery Barn to begin with, but after searching high and low for stylish plug-in (which was a MUST) sconces, we found out quickly that there weren't a whole lot of options. Once we agreed on the style we wanted, I just patiently waited for a free shipping email to arrive in my inbox. ha! Yup, that's right, I wasn't making my move until the right moment. I knew PB didn't carry these sconces in their stores, so I was going to HAVE to order them online. Thankfully a pair of these sconces was already discounted $30, but shipping alone was another $30+.
I can't remember what the exact "sale" was that they were having, but my waiting paid off, because I finally got a free shipping code and saved myself over $60.00 total. Whoohoo!
These were a cinch to put up, and we REALLY like them, along with all the extra space we have on our nightstands now.
As you can see, I propped this huge mirror up on my table as well, because I fell in love with it while thrift shopping. Cason told me that the 80's called and wanted their mirror back. (ugh)... I told him that he was crazy and this bad boy is WHERE IT'S AT!
Yes, part of me knows that it's way too big for the space... yet the rest of me loves it SO MUCH for it's functionality when it's time to get ready for the day, sleek shape and thin gold frame, that it's most likely going to end up staying anyway.
"Correctly" proportioned items or ample space for something super-awesome in a room is overrated sometimes... wouldn't you say?
;)

Beautiful....I have the same lighting situation in my master....your bedside dressers are exactly what I've been searching for -- can you tell me where they're from?
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy,
DeleteWe actually got them from a friend who was wanting to get rid of them, because she was getting new ones :)
You can read about their makeover here: http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/2013/07/master-bedroom-makeover-nightstand.html
LOVING the sconces! Brass with grey (on your headboard) is one of my favorite combos - the cool and warm tones are perfect together.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jennifer!!!
DeleteIf I were you, I would just paint the ceiling fan. I would probably paint it white so it blends with the ceiling....you wouldn't even have to take it down. just use a plastic trash bag, tape it around the fan and spray into it. you can take the blades down and paint them separately. you could even stencil the blades if you wanted to....
ReplyDeleteWe had thought about painting the fan, but really dislike the light it came with. There's not much we can do about that... but painting it still might be an option! Thank you for the suggestion!
Deletepainting it white would make the light disappear into the fan. and the whole thing would just disappear into the ceiling....another choice would be a stand fan that he can have on and then you could have your chandelier....
DeleteI'm sorry but your old lamps were great in your space. Wouldn't have changed if it were me (just saying).
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess that proves my point... it was a hard decision, because either would have been great in my eyes too! :)
DeleteLove it! Thx for the update! The sconces are just perfect......and way to score on the free shipping. I say the mirror should stay.....it's awesome ;).
ReplyDeleteThanks Leigh Anne!
DeleteI think that mirror might just have to stay too. I love the shape and size, it's so cool! :)
Those lamps are incredible! I used to hate brass. I wanted everything to be silver (so 2005) And now I'm obsessed with brass! Thanks for the eye candy!
ReplyDeleteMe too! It's crazy how our style changes isn't it!?
DeleteI think I might need to actually chill out on the brass, it might be getting a little out of hand. haha!
Well I (just imagine that in a huge font, double-underlined, bolded and italicized) think it's awesome. After all, it's about what you like, not what the rules say, right?
ReplyDeletehaha! THANK YOU!
DeleteAnd yes, I DO think it's about what you really like, and less about "the rules" when it really comes down to it!
The brass is making a comeback! Well, I guess I don't have to change out the hardware in my house...It's coming back! Yeah! ;) Do you hire out? No seriously...do you? Travel to Idaho and you can be my BFF/mentor. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love these and would also love the extra space on my nightstand. Genius!

ReplyDeleteWhere are your night stands from?!
ReplyDeleteHow about a funky fandelier instead of the ceiling fan? Best of both worlds!
ReplyDeleteI love the sconces! They are amazing. Did you make your headboard? If so, where did you get the fabric?

ReplyDeleteHey it's your bedroom and if you're happy with it, then who cares? I loved the lamps/shades but the sconces do save space. I'd love to have a sconce up but I change my mind too often. When we had our bed on another wall I had a little very vintage lamp on wall so I could read at night, not bother hubs. But the plug went kafooey and hubs hasn't repaired it, gee wonder why, hmmm. We changed our bed to another wall because it was very cold on an outside wall in the winter. Hubs says he's not changing the bed again, he about popped a gasket changing it one time. Can't change rugs anymore either. I used to change in winter to a wool rug on floor but when we put the jute one in for summer he said no more, same reason. We are getting a little old to be moving a king sized bed and wrestle with a rug under it. Doggoned it anyway. Your hubs cracked me up with the "the 80's are calling" comment. He seems to be very amenable to doing things for you. Happy week
ReplyDeleteAwesome , this is a nice trick , love it.

Do you think you could post the full, most current blog post? And then shorten the others? It's really hard to read on any of the readers if you have to click on the link to open up your page. Just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI love all the gold and brass and you use. I'm still stuck on silver tones. I'm trying to bring the gold and brass in, but it's hard because all I recall is my mom's house (now and growing up - guess her house is coming back into style - haha). I grew up with all these brass trinkets around and 2 huge brass swans I used to have to clean. It was a pain. Then I see what you do and like it. How do you make a subtle switch while your trying to get used to it? Our style is rustic country cottage. One thing I'm trying is to go to copper for Thanksgiving decor and live with that for a month to see how it goes.

It's all gorgeous! I've been waiting for the perfect brass sconces for our bed, too. And I took advantage of the same Pottery Barn sale, except my code was 15 percent off. Love it!
ReplyDeleteBTW, my hubby doesn't understand all of the trends, either. :)
Loved love love your style! I too am married to a fan sleeper and long for stylish lighting. One of the first things I bought for our daughters nursery was a super cute chandelier. My husband talked about how impractical it was the entire time he was putting it up but I just love it!
ReplyDeleteCould you try a tabletop fan on Cason's side? Even the cheap as chips options can be prettied up with spray paint and you could have your dream overhead light.
ReplyDeleteCould you compromise with a tabletop fan on his side? Even the cheap as chips versions can be prettied up with spray paint and you could have your dream light.
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky to have such a handy husband! Love the updates!
ReplyDeleteI love what you store your jewelry in! How cute and creative :)
ReplyDeleteI love that mirror! Your lighting update, although a hard decision, turned out perfectly! I think it was totally worth it.

ReplyDeleteDude! It looks amazing. I really need those sconces!!!! Eeek!!! ...and PLEASE keep the mirror in your room! It's gorg! Seriously couldn't love it more!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this post I was so excited I thought you were finally going to answer my paint question!!! :( I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sconces!
ReplyDeleteThis looks wonderful! I love your new source of lighting, and I agree with you that it definitely does free up a lot more room on your nightstands. (Which, by the way, I totally enjoyed your post on how you revamped your nightstands. It was a night and day difference! Love the white paint that you chose to use) =) On a side note, your bed comforter looks super comfortable! Do you remember where you got it?
ReplyDeleteLove this!! Bring on the gold!!
ReplyDeleteWow amazing !!!
