I have a confession to make...I am obsessed with stripes.
Stripes of ALL kinds! Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, bursting, zigzag (chevron), backwards, forwards, upside down...
You get the idea, right?
You get the idea, right?
I know, I know. Stripes have been around for ever, they're totally "in", they're SO yesterday... blah, blah, blah. EVERYONE has their take on "stripes." Particularly in home decor, and ESPECIALLY when you're painting them on a wall.
Personally, I feel that it's something that will never go out... just continue to be altered one way or another, to fit the current trend. I painted the first nursery we ever had with green stripes years ago, and remember thinking then... I LOVE this! Fast forward 6+ years later and I'm STILL obsessing about painting stripes on the walls in my basement! They won't be vertical OR green, but they WILL happen
:)
:)
That being said, diving into our main area basement remodel is pretty much the last thing on our list right now. Even though it's totally empty (literally not ONE piece of furniture remains) and ready for a fresh coat of bright, beautiful paint, we just have more pressing matters on our hands.
What you ask?...
Our oldest, the twins.
I don't know what it is about completing kindergarten, or turning 6, but for some reason, my little girls aren't little girls anymore! (sniff) I swear they have grown up SO much these past 6 months. They have legit chores around the house (that they're actually REALLY good at), bigger clothes, more shoes, funny grown-up-kid personalities, and all of a sudden... LOTS of opinions. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just... different. And I guess I should say that their "opinions" are more... decisions.
We as parents have decided that these girls are just TOO big for their itty-bitty room upstairs, so down to the big bedroom in the basement they go! The twins have been ecstatic about the new plans, but also had some input of their own...

Opinion #1
"We'd rather sleep in a Royalty-kinda' bed, Mom."
For the past 3 years the twins have been sleeping in (ironically enough) twin beds... or should I say BED. Every night we tuck these chicks into their own beds, and when we go back to check on them a few hours later, they're a tangled up sweaty mess, smooshed onto one twin bed or the other. They do the same thing when they take a nap. It's like they can't sleep unless some part of their bodies are touching!
Maybe it's a twin thing, maybe it's not. Either way, I've given up, and given IN to the fact that they HAVE to sleep together. I had pretty much already decided this, when one Sunday Emberly and Jocelynn came into our room hand in hand and had this conversation with us,
Em: "Mom, Dad, we need to tell you something"
Me: "Uh, are we in trouble?"
Cason: "Did somebody kiss a BOY!?!?" (in his best teasing voice)
Cason and I laugh at each other thinking we're so funny
Em: "Ugh! No guys, it's not really funny like that, stop!"
Jocey: "This is for real guys."
Cason and I trying to hold back puffs of laughter, because their faces were so serious
Cason: "Okay, what is it?"
Em: "Well... we just decided something."
Me: "Oh, yeah? What?"
Em: "Jocey, you do it."
Jocey: "FINE! Mom, we think it would be good for us to sleep in a Royalty kinda' bed now."
Cason and I looking at each other with wide eyes shooting back and forth trying not to laugh
Cason: "Ohhhh-kay... Well what kind of bed is that?"
Em: "Daaaaad, you know, the Queen's kind!?"
Me: "Ohhh!, a queen sized bed!?"
Jocey: "Yeah Mom! You know, because we're gonna be Princesses, and then Queen's someday, and stuff?... but not for real, because I'm gonna be a pet doctor, but just for pretend, because you know... I like that stuff too."
Em: "Yeah, me too."
After Cason and I nodded and told the girls we'd think about it, they left and we DIED laughing. We knew they had heard us TALKING about a queen sized bed for their new room in the basement, but I guess we never really explained to them what it actually MEANT! LOL.
So, with our garage sale money we earned, we ended up buying them a new "royalty-kinda' (aka: queen sized)'" bed.
:)
Needless to say, we also started in on the rest of the room as well.
As you can see we've been using the space as a toy room. But because we FINALLY cleared out the home decor hoard from our second bedroom, in the basement this Summer, we've taken all of this stuff and moved it into that room for now.
We knew that we wanted to brighten this room up tremendously. We also knew that we didn't want just plain white... so we went with the next best thing. Gray-white :)
Remember the beautiful Repose Gray from Sherwin Willams that we painted the office? Well, we went back to that lovely swatch and were immediately sold on the color only one shade lighter. Eider White.
So a-paintin' we went!
I know I say it EVERY time, but I honestly can't believe how big of a difference a simple can of paint can make in a room.
Okay, I'm sure at this point you're thinking... Wait, didn't this post start off with her talking about stripes?
:)
Yup, you're right. I didn't forget.
A few weeks back I decided to create a Pinterest board with a few "girly room" ideas on it for the twins to look at. The twins decided from the photos what THEY liked...
Opinion #2
"I think just the gray-ish stripes and a white ruffle Princess bed."
Yup... out of about 100 photos, we narrowed our board down to a little over 10 images. All for different reasons, but most importantly, because they were the pictures that both me and the girls loved! Above were their top three pick... go figure.
Jocelynn put it best when she said... "Mom? Doesn't that bed just look so ruffly and comfy?" as Emberly then chimed in with, "Yeah Mom, I think just gray-ish stripes and a white ruffle Princess bed for our new room."
My thoughts?... "I can TOTALLY do that."
:)
So on Monday, we'll be talkin' all about stripes! Even lined, feminine, slightly contrasting in color, good ol' stripes!
Till then?... have a great weekend!

I'll never get over stripes of any kind either; LOVE them! That room is going to be amazing; and your "royal" girls are adorable!! :) I've been on the search for a good light gray, too. awesome!

ReplyDeleteWe just painted with Eider White in our house too and I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThey are simply the cutest little/big girls ever! I SO look forward to this age! I love the idea of a big kid room, and the fact that they share a bed is precious. I would love to know what it's like to have that special bond with someone else, it's just SO neat!
ReplyDeleteI'm a twin and my sister and I shared a queen bed until about 8th grade and then we switched to 2 twins. She would always wake me up in the middle of the night talking in her sleep. She'd say "Carrie!" and I'd wake up and ask "what?" and she'd mumble. Can't wait to see the room!
ReplyDeleteLOVE those girls. best part of the post.
ReplyDeleteCute! I adore stripes on walls, and I love the soft gray you picked out. Can't wait to see how the room turns out!
ReplyDeleteBAHAHAHA! Love the sneak peek pic!
ReplyDeleteThis is too cute :) Your girls are adorable.
ReplyDeleteMy twin girls just turned 8 and used to share a room with 2 twin beds. I thought I was doing a great thing when I split them into 2 seperate rooms to give them "space"..... Now they just decide whose room they want to sleep in for the night and go to bed together! It's cute though.
ReplyDeleteYour girls are so cute! The stripes look very nice and relaxing.
ReplyDeleteCoolest mom on the block! Love these stripes! Can't wait to see the tutorial!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the wonders of a can of paint! I'm always amazed at how something so simple can change a room so significantly.
ReplyDeleteI do think you may be the only people I know who paint as much as I do! I enjoy it and I always have paint on me somehow/somewhere. ;)
