Decorating Shelves - Everyday Kitchen Shelf Decor

I have been sharing all the fun things that we bought for our "everyday" kitchen shelf look, but I realized that I hadn't shown an entire photo! (my bad)
Here it is!
 


I knew I wanted to work in some greenery and floral items, but I didn't want them to LOOK fake-y. So these yellow blossoms and moss covered orbs were perfect!
The plate and small birdhouse brought the perfect touch of aqua (that's popping up in the rest of my house) into the space, without being overwhelming or looking out of place. I chose the birdhouse because I already had the vintage bird prints, and I chose the aqua plate because it was more of a modern piece that I knew would mix in well with the other more traditional elements.
I am trying to break the curse I have of "clumping", when decorating. I've always had the habit of gathering things together in little groups, and then when I stand back to assess my decorating, I notice that everything seems like it's in it's own little pile, instead of making a large beautiful decorated landscape.
Does anyone else have this problem?
So for this everyday look I knew I wanted to try a more symmetrical feel, mostly because that's always what I'm attracted to when I am gathering inspiration for decorating a space. There's just something about this layout that makes things appear cleaner and more "put together" as a whole.


What do ya think!? Are you a fan of the symmetrical decorating tactic? Do you have a plan of action when decorating, or do you just buy/collect and then figure it out as you go?

    I have major clumping habits when decorating! And I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Haha. Luckily, I have awesome friends that help me out though. Also, your incredibly beautiful and helpful blog =) THANK YOU!!

    Shelly, I love that while there is some symmetry, it's not all symmetrical. I especially love the top shelf arrangement. Brilliant!

    I love it, so bright and happy! I am a "clumper" too, almost every time I have to re-do a vignette because things are grouped together.

    Hi Shelley, I come and look at your blog... almost everyday :) your home is so pretty and bright! loooove it! I'm new to the blog world, and it has been a pleasure going through your makeovers and ideas! I saw your cute little aqua bird house and just wanted to let you know that your style has been totally copied onto national television (I like to think that anyway):) I dont know if you have seen any of the episodes to Bachelor Pad... it just started but anyway those little guys (aqua bird houses)are ALL over the house!! I like to think, "hey those are on houseofsmith's they must of gotten the idea from there!" ..... I always like to see things in my own place on tv, so thought you would too. Happy hump day!

    Love! I've been thinking about adding open shelves to the telephone nook in our kitchen (which we don't use - no landline) and this post just pushed me over the edge. Ikea tonight!

    I tend to like BALANCED, but not symmetrical....
    I love how you've done this shelf and especially the aqua colour. It's made it's way here and there in my house too!

    Shelley, I love this shelf area in your kitchen. So much I'm tearing down wallpaper in my bathroom and dining room to repaint and then repaint the kitchen, something brighter. I have a very open house and not a lot of walls so I can't have a shelf like yours but it's the inspiration for my house makeover. Yippee!!

    I just love you shelves...They are such a peppy uplifting happy idea, Heart! I am not sure why I thought you had painted chairs at your table, but when I saw them in your picture unpainted it threw me off a bit. Haha. I totally pictured your table with all deferent colored chairs! I can't wait to finnish my dinning space, you've given me so many great ideas!

    I love your kitchen shelves. I always look forward to see what you're going to do to them next. Reminds me of storefront window displays that change out with the holidays and the seasons....but with the pizazz we've grown to love from the HofS;) BEAUTIFUL!

    I love all of your ideas...your blog is AMAZING!! It looks like you change your shelving decor out quite frequently...do you store your previous decor or get rid of it? I would love to know if you have any good ideas on storing the decor you're not using at the time? I hate clutter and I'm an organizing freak...which limits me in changing items out...ya know:) Also, I would love to see room by room how you've decorated your house...thanks for the blog...keep up the good work!

    I love all of your ideas...your blog is AMAZING! It looks like you change the decor on your shelves frequently...do you usually store your old decor or get rid of it? I would love to know if you have any great ideas for storing items if you keep the decor. I hate clutter and I'm an organizing junkie so it limits me on changing my decor frequently...ya know:) I would love to see your decorated house room by room if at all possible.
