So I've been obsessed with color and painted pretty things lately. Remember the tubs? :) Well, painting our tub was a bit of a reach for Cason us, so I moved on to more feasible items. And doors seemed like the perfect catalyst for my "pretty paint obsession"
Black, yellow, blue, green... gah! I want to paint every door in my house a color!!! lol. It's definitely NOT Cason's "trend of choice", this time around. But he's letting me go through this phase anyhow.
:) I love that guy.
I realize that we BOTH have to live in this space together, so I decided to start off small...
Our front door needed a bit of sprucing up, due to the elements from outside. The direct sun, cold, hot, snow, and kids... makes for a scratched, paint chipped door.

I contemplated re-painting the door myself, but I really didn't want a rolled or brush marked door. And I also didn't want to invest the time and money into a hard-to-clean sprayer, just for one quick job.
So I hired it out. I called a neighbor who had her front door painted last year, and she gave me the number of a local painter who charged me a really fair price to not only spray a new coat of black paint to the outside of my front door, but to the INSIDE as well!
He simply taped and tented off the door with plastic and went to town!

I have to admit, the first few days it was a bit "trippy"... Cason was out of town when the inside of the door was painted black and I don't know about you, but when MY hubby is out of town, I'm totally on edge. I get so jumpy! Espeically at night. So the first night that the door was painted black, I walked out to get a drink from the kitchen at about 1am, froze in place and about had a heart attack. I wasn't used to the dark door, and for a second, out of the corner of my eye, it looked like the door was OPEN to the dark outside. LOL.
gah! Freak-out much? ha!

Other then that little experience, I've LOVED the black!
I like that it "anchors" this space. The white was great too (nice and clean looking), but the black just kind of "grounds" everything and ads some drama to the space.
But I have to say that the BEST part about the inside of our front door being painted black is....

YOU CAN'T SEE THE DIRTY FINGER PRINTS
:)
Learning how to hide dirt = Happy Me
Ohhh, the black door makes such a statement--love it!
ReplyDeleteOoooh I LOVE IT! It's dramatic, beautiful, and classy!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have that same Ikea rug...LOVE!
PS- totally would have done the same thing about thinking the door was open without the hubby...haha!
I LOVE it! I'm wondering if my hubs will let me do this.... Not likely LOL
ReplyDeleteI love it black!! We painted our old home's door red. I wanted it inside as well, but I was vetoed! LOL
ReplyDeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteOoo I love the way it turned out! Definitely a statement that ties in your decor. My door is in desperate need of paint, too...
ReplyDeleteOlá!!!amei o hall de entrada ....charme puro
ReplyDeletebeijus e uma linda semana!!!!
I love the black door. It looks great! I've been thinking about painting our back door. Maybe?
ReplyDeleteI was contemplating doing this myself, and I love your results. I am going for it!
ReplyDeleteI *ADORE* the black door! GREAT JOB!
ReplyDeleteI think I may have to try it too. I always look at my front door and wonder how I could take it to the next level! Now I know what to do! YAY!
I think it looks AWESOME!!! I love it :)
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteOur next door neighbor just painted her door red, I think given the chance to do it again she would have hired it out too... you definitely made the right choice to bring in a professional. Seeing her bright red door everyday makes me want to paint mine... but we're moving in about a month and that's a little too much work to put into something that isn't going to be "mine" anymore! I had never considered black, but you're right it does ground the space! I'm a fan!
ReplyDeleteI am contemplating on retouching the pain on our door and I am planning to do it myself! WHOA, now I am scared to use the roller! B
ReplyDeleteJust lovely! We've also painted our front door black and we love it!
ReplyDeleteIt looks GREAT! If we didn't have our house on the market right now, I would TOTALLY be jumping on this trend bandwagon!
ReplyDeleteI like it! It really looks great in your space. And I probably would have thought the same thing about the door being open with my husband gone. I go around and check all the doors and windows at least twice while he is gone! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's FAB!! Makes your entry look "finished" if you know what I mean. Kudos! :)
ReplyDeleteohhh I love that!
ReplyDeleteLooks great, we painted ours black too and I love it....
ReplyDeleteit's gorgeous! and now on my 'to-do' list, too! thanks for the suggestion of hiring someone, sometimes diy doesn't quite make it through as well as one would like :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! And I love that you have a wreath on the inside of your door, I'm definitely going to have to do that!
ReplyDeleteI painted my door black too!http://mommahenscoop.com/?p=78
ReplyDeleteLooks great! See ya later dirty finger prints! ;) LoL!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks awesome! I want to do it when we move to the house we plan on staying in for awhile. Making the choice of what color to do will be the hardest decision:)

I LOVE your new painted door. Over the winter I painted by front door aqua, and I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen it done on the inside, and I LOVE IT! Looks AH-mazing. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI also get totally all gaspy & jumpy when my husband is away...and may sleep with a knife under the matress..."just incase".
Lovin' it!
ReplyDeleteI am doing this! My garage entry door is so nasty. The black would be a mucho lovely change.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT! :) I've been wanting to replace our front door. It's got a huge oval see through window in it, and I hate it! I feel like people are looking in our house at night! And I definitely want black!! Just gotta convince Adam it's time to buy a new door!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love it!! The first thing we did when we moved into our house was paint the front door, garage door and all the shutters black (6 years ago). Some people thought we were nuts but I LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteI want to paint our lower cabinets in the kitchen black now, thank you. Just have to get the husband on board...which might take a while. But the no fingerprints thing totally sold me.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know who you hired to paint the door. I want to have mine painted now!

I ♥♥♥ the black door! I painted mine at Christmas time and.......cut my front door into a Dutch Door! I am so in love with my new black dutch door and I have to admit, it's quite the talk in the "hood"! I think I might have started a trend. You can see my "how to make a dutch door" on my blog. I'm not as talented as you but it worked and I love it!
ReplyDeletePS Your black door DOES anchor your entryway!
Beautiful! I love it! It does anchor the space and black gives such class to a room I think! I laughed out loud when the door scared you! lol
ReplyDeleteLou Cinda
Love it! And hiding dirt (little finger prints) is always a good thing :)
ReplyDeleteLove the black door. I've always liked black for a front door. The inside of my house is to dark to have black on the inside. I'm sure I would have jumped out of my skin seeing the door at night. lol
ReplyDeleteLove it girl!! Our front door has had one coat of black on the inside for a couple months now. I may need to get on that!! I can't believe the difference-- beautiful! (And thanks for the link!!)
ReplyDeleteSo much better! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteWow, that really make a statement! I love it. And I have a totally random, off-topic question for you -- where did you get chicken wire for that frame in your entry? I want to back some great big frames with it like you have here to make an art wall for my kids, but you have to buy a whole roll at IFA and I don't want to spend $25. Can you point me in the right direction? (I live in the same general area of the world as you, I think, so a local recommendation would be perfect.)
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome! My mom went with a black door a few years back and I love it. Because the rest of the trim is white, it adds a nice pop! Looks great
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteI love it, plus when the trend is over you can always change it back! Good job! Keep up all the good work! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI love this and have been thinking of doing our's too---good inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love it! It gives the entry a character and makes it even more elegant. Now I have to ask where do you find time to do all this with kids and your business, where I can barely take a shower and I only have one kid? :)
ReplyDeletewow LOVE the change. it makes allll the difference.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! You always have such great taste. I think painted doors are awesome. In fact I am tempted to paint my faux wood door for a punch of excitement...we'll see. I think a painted door can be the perfect way to bring color and a statement into our often small entryway spaces not to mention the curb appeal on the outside.
ReplyDeleteLove the difference it made!! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteI about peed my pants when I read about your night time encounter with your black door...Heheh!!! I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me! :)
ReplyDeleteYou will NEVER go back to a white door after having black!
Your entry way looks AMAZING!!!! Crap...Now I have to go home and rework mine...Aghhh!
BTW here is the post I was telling you about ;) http://homebyheidi.blogspot.com/2011/06/black-doors.html
my front door is black on the outside (had to think about what color the inside was!! ha!) it can be tricky at Halloween time with a black door for hanging something there-as you can imagine... i'll have to see what you come up with to copy! :)
ReplyDeleteLovely and awesome painting.

LOVE it! (ofcourse I also have a black front door so ofcourse I love it)
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteWe just finished building our new home last week and I had the entry door, side lights, garage door into the house and side garage door painted a copper red color inside and outside. I love it.
Shelley, I just love it! Great job :)
ReplyDeleteI have now painted every entry door black. When I painted our garage entry door black, everytime I came home and opened the garage door I thought our door was open too (into the house). I love it! I told my husband I may just paint everything black and nail gun the sheets to all the beds :0)
ReplyDeletehttp://imnotatrophywife.com
I painted our front door turquoise and all the interior doors dark chocolate brown. So yeah, I'm a big fan of coloured doors :-) Yours looks great!
ReplyDeleteHELP! I've been on this new door color kick for about a month now. My house is tan and brown and my front door totally bores me! But it just seems impossible to find a color that would go well! I'd love ideas along with that guys number if you can! Love you blog like always!
ReplyDeleteKaseyandmckall.blogspot.com
I am lovin' the black! I especially like that painting things black has been a trend that has stuck around. I usually only try things that I know will have staying power longer than one season :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I really love how that black just sets off the whole entryway nicely. The white worked well, but the black pops!
ReplyDeleteI like the colored door trend. My grandparents replaced their front door with a dark red one several years ago and it looks really sharp. I love the bright color trend too!
I'm sitting here looking at my front door thinking hmmmm!! As my hubby is saying, "What are you up too now"...LOL
ReplyDeleteYour door looks great :-)
Love it!
ReplyDeleteI painted my front door red....fabulous red. It took me hours to chose just the right red....it is a bit hard to put wreaths on it in fall.....oranges and yellows aren't great, but Christmas is a killer. The rest of the year I have a wreath that has red geraniums....works beautifully
ReplyDeleteI LOVE painted doors! We painted our front door black in the Spring and it looks even better than I thought it would. But like you, a black door looks "open" at night! Every time we pull up to the house at night, I swear the front door is open. LOL
ReplyDeleteI love your new door! I've been planning on doing the same thing...but I'm wondering which shade of black to use? Who knew there were so many "blacks"! What color did you use?...or was it just "black"...
ReplyDeleteI love it Shelley! I painted my front door and shutters black a couple months ago and it is the perfect pop! I didn't think about doing the inside of the door though, great idea!
ReplyDeleteI finally took the plunge in April, after debating red, black, red, black, red, BLACK! I know what you mean about walking past and thinking the door was open, heart attack city!

Love that!! It totally pops from the inside!
ReplyDeleteLove the black door- quick question- what sheen did you use? My cousin did a high shine auto paint on his door and it's ick. I want to do black, but can only think of the super shine on a door. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to do this for years but chickened out everytime. So after I saw how cute yours was I went ahead and did mine and WOW I am in love again with my entry way. I keep staring at it everytime I go by and when neighbors come over I have to invite them in just to see it. The bad thing is its addictive and now I want to do all the doors! Thanks for all the inspirations and keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are amazing! I really love this:)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on how it anchors the space! I'm also impressed at how cleanly the man painted! :)
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog from Thrifty Decor Chick's and I'm sitting here cracking up because I also painted the inside of our front door black earlier this year. For the first few nights I would stop in my tracks for a split second when passing by thinking my front door was wide open at night! Too funny. :) I totally forgot about that because now I don't even think about it. :)
ReplyDeleteYour home is gorgeous and I am now following your blog! :)
hey, did I miss something...did you add tin tile to your bench?
ReplyDeleteYour door is gorgeous! I've linked this to my doors post too today, for inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove your door! and the whole entry... where did you get that rug? it's fabulous.
ReplyDeleteLove your door! and the whole entry... where did you get that rug? it's fabulous.
ReplyDeleteApart from just plants you can also add small garden decorations and welcoming benches along with chairs or small tables.
ReplyDeleteThe color you choose for your home can make a huge impact on visitors. I always find that matching your front door to your window frames and garage door works a treat, keeping everything uniform.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful home you have. I am impressed not only with the black door but wondering if you could tell me the paint color on your walls and trim of your entry way. Really love the walls and haven't been able to find that perfect shade.
ReplyDeleteCould you email me? Summerserenityday@gmail.com
Thank you
Consider other material options for beautiful front doors, like stainless steel. Steel doors do not have to look institutional but instead can look quite stunning. They also hold up well against environmental elements.
ReplyDeleteLove this whole entryway! What color are your walls?
ReplyDeleteShelley/Cason, do you have the name of the black you used? Or can anyone suggest a good one? Thanks!!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteDeanne
The black IS beautiful and I have it on my front door BUT, it, too, shows fingerprints and scratches. How are you dealing with this?
