How to Truncate Posts in Blogger: Tutorial

{Truncating/Compressing Posts on Blogger}

I had a TON of emails and a few comments after my last post, on HOW to actually "truncate" or compress posts on blogger.  A few other bloggers told me that it was possible, but I just figured it out, barely.
Some of you are fans, some... not so much.  Either way, it's simple and quick, so I thought I would share...Here's how you do it!

First, you write your post, in your post body like so.
Then you put your cursor where you want your page break to be, and you click the little icon above, that looks like a ripped piece of paper.

It will come up with an image that looks like a dotted line, where you put the cursor.
If you preview your post, you WILL NOT SEE the post truncated.
But once you PUBLISH the post, it will have text like this:

This is the link that your readers will click on, to take them to the ENTIRE post, so that they can read the whole thing.
You can also change what the text says, that will redirect your readers.  Here's how you do it:

Go to your dashboard and click on your design... so this page comes up.
then click on the BLOG POST EDIT button, like this...

Once you click on that, this window will pop up, and you can change your text, here:

That's it!  Super easy.
Take it or Leave it.  ha! :)

Also, I've noticed a lot of  "NO-REPLY" comments coming in from readers again, lately.
Have you fixed that, so that the bloggers who's blogs you comment on, can comment BACK to you???
If not, go HERE, to see a tutorial on how to change that too!

  2. Great information. I have been very busy trying to make my blog load faster and this might just be it.
One question though, you don't truncate the most recent post. Is that a standard setting somewhere? Or do you manually have to go into the editor to truncate it after posting a new one?
I use ( and LOVE) Livewriter to write, publish and postedit my posts, but going into a published post in bloggers editor to change it frequently messes things up. So I'll have to see if this works for me.
Thanks for giving me one more thing to figure out about my blog ;-)

  8. Thank you for the tutorial!!! For some reason I do not have the page break icon, but I will look into that. I love reading your blog and personally love the Blogger format as opposed to the WP one.

  12. Interesting! I had no idea how to do this. What would be really nice is to be able to do it with all other posts other than the latest one. i guess that's a Wordpress gig...

  16. As a blogger, I was having a hard time seeing how many people were reading which post because I would have 5 full posts on the home page and when they went to my blog I wasn't sure what people read. Now, it's easy to tell when a post is a winner or a dud. Also, it makes the blog less than a mile long. Big +.
    Thanks for the info.

  17. Thanks for the tips! Ha~ I couldn't sleep, and I have found myself reading this post for the third time! I recently found out about this, and couldn't believe it was that easy. My husband even gave me a little clap to show his pride in me. ;-) So I am a resident of Provo, and just wanted you to know how much fun I think you are, and how I can't wait till your bathroom is finished. Also that I am determined to get my hubs to take me on the same date you guys just went on...my dream date...hehe :-)

  25. Thanks for the "how to" create the break. It appears all bloggers will need to take this action to protect our work. Wanda

  26. Should we go back and do this to all our old posts? or only do it for new content. my head hurts from this. ugh

  27. awesome! I was looking on how to do that last night! thanks for making my life easier! :)

  28. thanks so much or this tute! so easy. saving it to my favorites bar to try out tomorrow! I agree completely with the No-Reply deal. So many comments I reply to in email and go to hit send and see that there isn't an email address...argh! Then I have to copy, take note of the commenter's name, click over to my blog, scroll down to the correct comment, hit reply, and paste it in! So time consuming!!

  31. I am just learning about "Scraper" sites so when I googled "How to truncate a post in blogger" -- your site and post came up :) So I wanted to thank you for your simple tutorial -- worked perfectly. I don't mind blogs that truncate -- especially knowing it is helping to keep people from stealing our work and taking credit for it!

  40. When I did this, no "read more" showed up on my post. I tried editing that wording ... could I have messed it up? The post just ends with no pointer about where to go next.

  41. okay..maybe I am missing a step. I do the page break and then nothing...I followed the tutorial??

    1. Hmm... I just put my cursor wherever I want the pagebreak to be, then hit that icon with the broken piece of paper and a line should appear.
You won't see it if you preview your post, but when you PUBLISH it, the post will stop wherever you put the page break.
      Hopefully that helps!

  44. Shelly,
I followed the tutorial and when you go to my homepage the post is broken in the correct spot but the "Read more of this post" words are missing so there is no way for me readers to read the rest! Yikes! How do I fix this?

  45. Thank you for posting this. :) I've started using this for my longer posts and added a link to this post on my "blogging journey" page to continue the sharing.

  48. Must say, this post was a life saver! I have been googling for what seems like forever to figure out how to condense my posts! There is not much on this topic, surprisingly. My posts are long so it is nice to provide a little teaser to allow for more content to be seen at once. Your tutorial worked perfectly! I am going to give you a virtual hug because I am so excited.

Thank you so much - you made me one happy blogger!

  50. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I have a question for you. I did as you said in my post DIY Centerpiece Burlap cake, it even had the little dotted lines while I typed the post. (you can see it here ...http://thriftyparsonageliving.blogspot.com/2013/11/diy-centerpiece-burlap-cake.html) but it is not showing up in the post truncated. Do you know what I've done wrong. Thanks

  51. I have been wondering about this forever!!! Then it hit me today that we have this amazing thing called GOOGLE and I Googled it. Your post popped up first and it was AWESOME! Who knew it was this easy!!?!? Now I want to read every single blogging post you've put out there AND I want you to come over and talk about blogging with me for like 60 hours. Sound good? Great! THanks so much!

  52. Does this also keep spam comments away? I was wondering about it. For some reason, I have been getting a ton of spam and readers from odd countries. I'm afraid someone is adding something to my old blog posts that I don't know about.

  53. I found your blog post in a Google search for how to truncate a blog posting. It's four years or so since you published it, but I just wanted to say Thank You! It was the easiest way I read in my search results! Some others wanted me to tinker with html-- um, no thanks. I was able to truncate my already published posts (there are only three--I am a neophyte, self-taught [with Google's help] blogger). I also read your post on making sure I'm not a No Reply blogger--I appreciate that tutorial as well. Thanks again!
