Master Bathroom Wood Planked Walls

{Master Bathroom Progress}
Slow & Steady...

I'm almost hesitant to share this post, being that nothing in our bathroom actually got accomplished that was pretty, nor really "finished". lol.
But here it is...

On Saturday, Cason decided to finish planking up the last wall around the tub.
Yes.  That's all we had left, and it took us about 3 months to finish that spot. ha!

Once Cason finished that, I whipped out my Dad's circular sander.
That thing has some KICK to it!...
And got busy
:)

I KNEW that this thing was going to create some "dust"...
but holy COW!  There was sawdust on EVERY surface and in EVER crevasse that the bathroom and I had!

These pictures were taken only after one side of the tub surround was sanded down.
It got way worse.  Basically to the point that I didn't dare take my precious camera in there. LOL

I had to stuff a towel under the door in our bedroom, and in front of the vent in our bathroom, to help keep the dust down, in the rest of our house.

At one point I stepped out of the bathroom to breathe some "clean air" and when I went back into the bathroom, I noticed I had left footprints.

ha, awesome!
So ya, it was a dirty job, but I'm glad that part is done!

So... this is where the "not so exciting" part comes in.
All that this sanding really did, was just this...

BEFORE:

AFTER:
If you notice, the boards are just smoother, and rounded a bit at the edges, instead of hard and straight... like how they come, when you buy them.

It's hard to tell in a photo, but it really does make a HUGE difference.
I'm glad I took the time to do it.

This is basically where we are, now.
Walls all boarded up and sanded smooth.

Still looking for the "perfect" lighting fixture,
and using an old white sheet as a window covering... lol

Next is filling all these little holes.
We've already set them... (made sure none of the nails were poking out) now they are just ready for some putty.
I like the knots and imperfections that the boards have, so those will stay, to peek through the white paint, but the man made nail holes, just gotta go.

We've been working on finishing touches for the living room as well, and it's really starting to come together too!
I'll have more to share with you on that later this week :)

And HOPEFULLY I'll also have these boards all painted up.
Wish me luck!

  2. My girlfriend did her son's room with the planking like that. It looked so cool. She did his room in a rustic woodland theme. Have fun finishing yours! Can't wait to see the finished room!

  9. You and Cason amaze me with your energy for renos. Your bathroom is going to rock - I cant just tell. I was thinking about you guys last night as I made the eggs and bacon pastry "thing" you posted on your blog a million years ago. I make it all the time and even do a veggie one now.
Anyway I am going private on my blog so just let me know if you want in ;-)

  10. Shelley!! It's looking great!! It always seems that the littlest things make the biggest messes right, but they just plain make the biggest difference as well! Can't wait to see how this and the living room turns out! :) You and Cason are an inspiration!!

  11. You is one dirty woman..haha Sanding is a thankless job isn't it? But it sure does pay off in the end. I am a bit confused..why didn't you take the boards all the way to the corner instead of butt them up against drywall? I'm sure you have a good reason I was just wondering..

can't wait to see it all done..so hurry up already :)

  17. Ok, I am asking this because I am really considering doing this. Would it be beneficial to do the sanding part prior to installing them outside or would that not really work? ( not trying to be a smart a!) I can't wait to see the finished procuct. And are those inexpensive pine boards?

  21. hi shelly this is awesome.. you guys are doing a great job.. i just have one question for you. when you putty the nail holes what do you use and can it be sanded and painted? i am still finishing my kitchen.(long process)

  22. wow! that is alot of dust! i want to know, how did you manage to get it all clean?!?!?!

  23. Better late than never....If you attach the hose from a shop vac to the part of the sander where the dust trap bag thingie goes, it will suck up a good bit of the dust. Just use duck tape to attach the two together. There is still some dust but it is only minimal. And maybe use some ear plugs, it can get load in a small space with the sander and the vac going at the same time.

  28. Isn't it amazing how much dust those little sanders can create? We had our cabinet guy here yesterday, and just cutting a shelf to get it out created dust ALL OVER the kitchen!! It is looking good. Can't wait to see what you've been up to in the living room.

  30. totally awesome job! i would be nervouse about sanding inside - especially in my bathrooms... neither of which have any access to the outside world!! i mean... if we lived in kansas and had a tornado every other week we would be GOLDEN but as it is... we are living in louisiana and it just means i have to get ready in a dungeon every day. anyhoo... can't wait to see the rest of it!

  31. I have done sanding like that before and let me tell you... the bathroom is the easiest place to clean up that mess! So at least you had that going for you :) It looks awesome though and what a great idea for your bathroom! I love it.

  34. well it's looking great, and I just wanna say that I'm glad it's taken this long! makes me feel better about mine. It was a little space, but still a lot of work! But yes, worth it when it's done! And after seeing your pics, I think I'm glad I had rich sand our boards outside in the garage. :) can't wait to see it finished!

  35. Good luck! I totally know how much it stinks to fill millions of tiny nail holes. I just revealed our basement bedroom trim. That was tedious, especially because we were finishing our entire basement. Happy filling and more sanding ;)
