This has got to be my MOST favorite project that we have done to date. I LOVE the way it turned out. I've gotten lots of emails about this bathroom ceiling... so here ya go!
The full tutorial!
Before
Our ceiling was just a bit too long for JUST a plain beadboard ceiling, and we didn't want to have any seams between pieces, so I came up with the idea of doing a thick frame, to compensate for the extra space, that the beadboard couldn't reach.
We bought some 7 inch board... and cut a basic 45 degree angle frame
(Cas making sure it fits well, AFTER the cut... Ya... that's how we roll... lol)
This is the whole thing... cut... before we painted and installed it.
I painted all the pieces white before we installed anything.
The less painting in the "air" that you... your husband has to do... the better! lol.
I've said it before... he takes ALL the credit for this projects amazing work. lol. Gimmie a break, I'm only 5'3

(we also used our nail gun and put a few nails along each piece.)

This room only took one piece.
We actually had to cut it down a bit, after we had the frame up.
This isn't just a one man/woman job... it takes a little "crew"... and a photographer. :)
On goes the trim piece, inside.
We just used liquid nails for this step, and some tape to hold it in place while it dried... we didn't want to split the thin wood.
ALL the work we do is ALWAYS perfect!

UPDATE:
I've had some questions on how this ceiling is holding up to hot showers and condensation.
We haven't had ANY problems :)
I think if you caulk it all up well, and use a higher sheet paint, like a semi-gloss, then the hot water and such shouldn't be a problem :)

WOW! I totally love this. My brother is in the middle of renovating and is turning what was a massive bathroom into a bedroom. It has a pine lined ceiling and he's tearing it down! I keep trying to convince him just to paint it but he won't listen! Yours looks so beautiful.

But with this tutorial you created I just may want to lounge abit longer. This will be perfect for my bathroom. Bravo on a job well done and the photography. A CAVEAT about the bead board ceiling (voice of experience here) - If you do that on a larger space like we did, (kitchen) you need to take the sheetrock off the ceiling first then add extra boards between ceiling joists to give you enough places to secure the bead board. Otherwise, the panels will start sagging where they meet at the seams, because liquid nails is not enough to hold it up on popcorn. How do I know? I have a bead board panel ceiling in my kitchen that has to come down. I read how to do it properly over a larger area after the problem was manifesting itself. Unfortunately, the seams don't all meet at joists. We can't even fix it with a pattern of foreign strips. Save yourselves and do the job right! Working on a larger ceiling with multiple panels is different.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! We actually just did a similar ceiling in my kitchen/family room and through to my front entry. We had knocked a wall out and didn't want to try patching the ceiling. It was more expensive than I thought it would be, but looks great!

It's a complete gut and renovation of a 1930s bathroom that I am doing largely on my own - scary but true. I want a beadboard ceiling to cover up the horrible, stained one that is in there now but didn't quite know how I was going to finish it off. Thank you, thank you, thank you! (actually the whole room is going to be beadboard panelling so that I don't have to worry about drywall & seams & dust & yukky stuff like that)

Shelly, when painting the bead board ceiling or wanscotting, do you paint it the same plain old white off the shelf that you painted your framed mirror? Or did you choose an actual white color to have mixed in? It's so hard to choose from all the whites and I want it to match the frame we did on the mirror :)

ReplyDeleteWe have sloped ceilings and the area was larger than one piece so we had to trim it a different way. I am happy with how it ended up but also love how you trimmed around the edges.
