This has got to be my MOST favorite project that we have done to date. I LOVE the way it turned out. I've gotten lots of emails about this bathroom ceiling... so here ya go!
The full tutorial!
Before
Our ceiling was just a bit too long for JUST a plain beadboard ceiling, and we didn't want to have any seams between pieces, so I came up with the idea of doing a thick frame, to compensate for the extra space, that the beadboard couldn't reach.
We bought some 7 inch board... and cut a basic 45 degree angle frame
(Cas making sure it fits well, AFTER the cut... Ya... that's how we roll... lol)
This is the whole thing... cut... before we painted and installed it.
I painted all the pieces white before we installed anything.
The less painting in the "air" that you... your husband has to do... the better! lol.
I've said it before... he takes ALL the credit for this projects amazing work. lol. Gimmie a break, I'm only 5'3
The boy has over a foot on me!
this pictures a couple years old... but you get the point...
K... moving on...
Some liquid nails on the back of each piece
(please don't mind the mess downstairs... ugh)
First piece up!
(we also used our nail gun and put a few nails along each piece.)
Just the frame up on the ceiling
Up goes the beadboard!
This room only took one piece.
We actually had to cut it down a bit, after we had the frame up.
This isn't just a one man/woman job... it takes a little "crew"... and a photographer. :)
On goes the trim piece, inside.
We just used liquid nails for this step, and some tape to hold it in place while it dried... we didn't want to split the thin wood.
ALL the work we do is ALWAYS perfect!
(rolling my eyes)...
Thank the heavens for the man/woman who created this stuff!
because we needed quite a bit. lol
Here is the view from the ground...
on my back... shorty before my 2 year old bounded in... and dive-bombed me.
Last trim piece!
Just adhered with liquid nails as well.
More nail hole filling, and painting!
Finished!
K... now go beadboard something, this weekend! :)
UPDATE:
I've had some questions on how this ceiling is holding up to hot showers and condensation.
We haven't had ANY problems :)
I think if you caulk it all up well, and use a higher sheet paint, like a semi-gloss, then the hot water and such shouldn't be a problem :)
This looks so great!
ReplyDeleteThat looks AMAZING! You guys are so creative and so talented.

WOW! I totally love this. My brother is in the middle of renovating and is turning what was a massive bathroom into a bedroom. It has a pine lined ceiling and he's tearing it down! I keep trying to convince him just to paint it but he won't listen! Yours looks so beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI love it! I would have never thought of doing that in the bathroom! It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I heart the large frame!!
ReplyDeleteLove the chunky trim, one quick question did you by a certain type of paint because of the moisture that can build up in the bathroom? My husband and I did a beadboard ceiling on the out side of my mothers porch. First time here to visit will be coming back.
ReplyDeleteOh it so good to see I am not the only one with a small bathroom. We live in an older house, back when bathrooms were a room you get in and get out quickly. But with this tutorial you created I just may want to lounge abit longer. This will be perfect for my bathroom. Bravo on a job well done and the photography. Thank goodness for wood filler too, I use it as well.
ReplyDeleteOH! happiness to the newly engaged couple, may they have many wonderful years together.

This is beautiful! I love that you just covered up the old one with something that looks ten times better! My husband has about a foot on me too, so I'm with you on utilizing that height when it comes to home improvement projects. :)
ReplyDelete-Arielle
So cute! Both the ceiling and your height difference (my grandfather was also a foot taller than my granny). We're thinking of doing that in our dining room. Did you use bead board plywood or individual pieces of bead board?
ReplyDeletemy friend gave me the link to your blog, which is amazing by the way! she knew i was struggling with the idea of hanging wallpaper beadboard on my bedroom ceiling. the ta-da here's your tutorial! just unbelievable your bathroom and i'd never thought about the wide trim. would love your thoughts from experience on hanging beadboard in a large room like a bedroom. i'm happy to say i'm your newest follower. very excited about that! lori. cloerl@comcast.net

Thank you so much for the wonderful idea. We just did this in my sewing room!
ReplyDeleteLove it, want to do it, and now I looked around to see if you figured out a solution for the vents in the ceiling - I have TWO! One for the fan, one the A/C vent. Ugh...shoot me an email mmsimpson(at)cox(dot)net. Or comment on my blog - I would love love love any ideas you have!
ReplyDeleteWe have a vent, and we're about to attempt this in our small bathroom. Did you get any answers to this question?
DeleteI love this idea! We are buying our first home and this is one of the first projects I have on our to-do list! I have one question...how does it hold up to the humidity/moisture in the bathroom? That was the one concern my husband has. Thank you so much for your blog!
ReplyDeleteOk... so I am actually starting to hate you and your handy husband a bit.... not really but i'm just sayin!! My poor husband has a lot to learn but when will he!?!? I would of had to do this by myself! Yalls looks wonderful, all the nail hole, gap filling, everything! Looks great!!
ReplyDeleteAnd what is up with that mess downstairs?!?! hahahahaha I love kids! (Had to be the kids right?)
Such a great job and soo beautiful that it gets me inspired!! =) I was wondering though, the white cabinet above the toilet, where did you get that from? I have been looking for one similar to that but have not really had any luck up here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I love all your projects that you've done! They're awesome! =) Keep it up and posting for all of us to read and enjoy! =) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Melanie S.
My husband may hate you and rue the day that I found this blog but I am SO doing this in our downstairs bath! Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! Amazing, I'm so glad I found this idea, I am in the process of a huge makeover in my bathroom ( we bought a really old home) The ceilings are gross. I love this idea! Definitely going to beg my husband to do this. Thanks! : )
ReplyDeleteLove it!! I want to do this in some of my rooms to cover up the popcorn. What a great redo!
ReplyDeleteLove the custom detail it adds to a small space. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSuch a unique idea! I am loving your bathroom. You guys did an awesome job! I'm visiting from CSI and happy to be your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteI love how calming that blue color is. Beautiful job on the ceiling.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea! That is what I like about this blogging world so many super smart women out there!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing your super idea.
This looks fabulous!!! I didn't notice a price breakdown and what type of beadboard you used, where did you buy it and how much do you think it all cost? If you have time, I'm curious. Thanks! Can you please come to Texas and decorate my entire house?
ReplyDeleteI would also like a materials and price break down. I am about to do this to two 11X11 rooms at my grandfather’s house!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness. i am so glad i found you. (via centsational girl). i have an entire folder on my computer dedicated to cieling treatments. they always seem daunting. until now. i LOVE your whole bathroom re-do. it gives me such insperation to re-do my daughters' bathroom. (but first i have about 146 projects that i need to do first.) but i have saved your blog and this post in a very special place and i will definitely be back when the time is right. heck, i'll be back before then, because i can't not read your whole blog now.
ReplyDeletenice to meet you!
~elisabeth
I love ALL of your projects, Shelley! You are TOTALLY amazing!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh! i'm sooo excited about this idea! we have too much of that "popcorn' ceiling in my house and some icky i dunno what for our kitchen & dining room ceilings. I"m totally going to do this in AT LEAST those 2 rooms. THANK YOU for the inpiration!
ReplyDeleteI love everything in the bathroom, but especially the beadboard ceiling. I really want to do this in our bathroom, but I did have a question about the beadboard. Is there a certain type of beadboard you used? Have you had any issues with it due to the moisture in the bathroom? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSaw this in the nick-of-time! II'm doing my powder room and am stuck for ideas for the ceiling. Great job! I'm your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Rita @MAY DAYS
Love it, juuuust LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteWon't "daddy" be excited when I tell him what "we" want to do next. lol
Oh and something we learned from our "experienced" neighbor years ago.
ReplyDeleteA little bit of putty and a little bit of paint,
makes a carpenter what he ain't.
Great job you to both!
A CAVEAT about the bead board ceiling (voice of experience here) - If you do that on a larger space like we did, (kitchen) you need to take the sheetrock off the ceiling first then add extra boards between ceiling joists to give you enough places to secure the bead board. Otherwise, the panels will start sagging where they meet at the seams, because liquid nails is not enough to hold it up on popcorn. How do I know? I have a bead board panel ceiling in my kitchen that has to come down. I read how to do it properly over a larger area after the problem was manifesting itself. Unfortunately, the seams don't all meet at joists. We can't even fix it with a pattern of foreign strips. Save yourselves and do the job right! Working on a larger ceiling with multiple panels is different.
ReplyDeleteWow what a difference that made! I just discovered your blog and have loved looking all over at the wonderful improvements you've made. Congrats! My girls love the twin room and I'm now on the hunt for some similar bedding in Indiana.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I found your blog while I was googling ideas on how to use my silhouette. I am also trying to figure out how to make my downstairs laundry/bathroom something that isn't ugly. I just saw your post on your laundry room (beautiful) and now I was checking out your bathroom.
ReplyDeleteOne question, where did you get the cabinet above the toilet and what cute little decorative things have you put in it? Thanks jasonandmarylee(at)gmail(dot)com
Your Blog is Fantastic, I just LOVE it! I was so glad to see your bathroom ceiling tutorial, my bathroom is virtually the same footprint as yours, less the window (townhouse). It looks wonderful and I WILL be copying it in my little bathroom too! Thanks for sharing! I'll be following for more great ideas....xx
ReplyDeleteSandra
trim home improvement projects are relatively easy with the right home improvement products and installation expertise.www.SabinesHome.com
ReplyDeleteHey! Love this, so thanks so much for the great tutorial. One question: What paint did you guys use?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! We actually just did a similar ceiling in my kitchen/family room and through to my front entry. We had knocked a wall out and didn't want to try patching the ceiling. It was more expensive than I thought it would be, but looks great!
ReplyDeleteI love this ceiling. It's just what my bathroom needs!
ReplyDeleteI love this ceiling. It's just what my bathroom needs to look finished. ;o)
ReplyDeleteSoooo ... straight up -- this tutorial is how I talked my husband into doing this throughout our whole house (only a 800 square foot cottage).
ReplyDeleteThanks for helping out my argument! :)
Becky
You've had this ceiling for a while now; it would be wonderful to know how it has held up to the bathroom moisture. I'd love to install this over my plaster bathroom ceiling which is looking sad, but I'm concerned about how it will look after a year of steamy showers.
ReplyDeleteFaNTASTIC!
ReplyDeleteThis looks AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteWhat a life saver you are!! I am embarking on an "impossibility" challenge this year. It's a complete gut and renovation of a 1930s bathroom that I am doing largely on my own - scary but true. I want a beadboard ceiling to cover up the horrible, stained one that is in there now but didn't quite know how I was going to finish it off. Thank you, thank you, thank you! (actually the whole room is going to be beadboard panelling so that I don't have to worry about drywall & seams & dust & yukky stuff like that)
ReplyDeleteI love how I can always find what I want to do described in detail out there in blogland. :)
Shelly, when painting the bead board ceiling or wanscotting, do you paint it the same plain old white off the shelf that you painted your framed mirror? Or did you choose an actual white color to have mixed in? It's so hard to choose from all the whites and I want it to match the frame we did on the mirror :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help!
Shelly, when you painted the ceiling or your paneling on the walls white, did you use the same white just out of the can off the shelf like you did when you painted the framed mirror? or did you actually choose a white to mix in? Thanks for you help!
ReplyDeleteLove.. LOVE LUV it!! Thanks for all the detailed pics!
ReplyDeleteHi! I pinned this on Pinterest, posted on fb, and featured at Creative DIYers Club. Please feel free to grab the feature button :)
ReplyDeleteWhat color is on the walls? I love the whole thing and want to do something similar.
ReplyDeleteLove your bathroom! I was also curious about the paint color, it is such a nice shade of blue.
ReplyDeleteWow! I just love everything you did in that bathroom! I'm tempted to fix up my kids bathroom exactly the same! hahaha and you make it look so easy!
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of doing this in my girls bathroom, but using that beadboard wallpaper. my mother-in-law has some left over from her project. and that towel bar is perfect for us (we have 3 girls too)
ReplyDeletewe did this in our bathroom
ReplyDeletewe just finished this in our bathroom. it looks awesome! thanks for the idae. i'd love to know what color is on your walls. send me an email if you get a minute! btskelton@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteIs the beadboard sold at Home Depot? I LOVE this idea, and I am going to do this in our house we are building! Thanks! =)
ReplyDeleteYup! :)
DeleteI love this! AND I would like to do this in our new house not only in the bathrooms, but the kitchen, dinning room and great room. The 3 spaces are an open floor plan. Do you have a suggestion on how to do such a large area? Thank you for giving me ideas on how to make a new house look charming. =)
ReplyDeleteCan you please tell me where you got the little cabinet? I have been searching for one like it for a while...
ReplyDeleteLove it and have been considering it with our remodel. Can you tell me where you found your little white cabinet. I've been looking for one for a while.
ReplyDeletecb
I am so going to do this!!! You made it look and sound kinda easy, I think I can attempt it. I am tired of our boring ceiling and this has a clean look to it! Refreshing!!! Thanks for the cool pics and sassy humor!!!

ReplyDeleteLooks amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT,GREAT JOB!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you did the beadboard! We did the same thing in our home in this post: http://www.mymobilehomemakeover.com/2010/08/mobile-home-bathroom-redux
ReplyDeleteWe have sloped ceilings and the area was larger than one piece so we had to trim it a different way. I am happy with how it ended up but also love how you trimmed around the edges.
Have you had any trouble with moisture on the beadboard? Ours has held up well. Thanks for the great post! PS...The DryDex spackle is excellent stuff!
Wow it looks amazing . Thanks for the cool pics and sassy humor !!!
ReplyDeleteCan you please update how this has withstood the test of time and the moisture of showers. Thanks much!!!!
