Canvas Collage Project

..............
I've had this project done for a while now, but was waiting to post it till after all the parade of homes
crazy-ness! (yes... that WAS a while back, but my life is a bit crazy lately)

Okay... so you know how you see a picture, and it TOTALLY inspires you.
I'm talking... consumes your mind, can't eat, sleep or focus on anything else!?!?!
:)

Well... that's how I felt about this picture here from Pottery Barn.
Yes... I know... you're already feeling inspired... right??? :)
I think it's the combination of the black and white photo's with the blue paneling.
Sooooo, me!  I love it.
Anyway, once I finally got all my canvases printed, after a little drama... I knew I wanted to replicate this idea for my own home, somehow!
This is what I came up with.

If you took a second to click on that link above and read... you can TOTALLY tell how passionate I am about my
Color Incorporated Pro Lab Canvases
Honestly... there is NO ONE else I would trust my photos... turned AMAZING canvases, to!
They are SPEEDY, easy to work with and SO friendly.

Okay, so here is how I accomplished this custom piece of art!

First, I found this great over sized framed at DI (Deseret Industries Thrift store).
It was $10.00... which was a little pricey... but it was EXACTLY what I wanted... so I didn't DARE pass it up!

Surpirse!!!  I spray painted it, flat white.
 LOL

Then I had Cason cut me a piece of scrap beadboard to fit inside, where the glass use to be.
I used the larger style beadboard for this project, mostly because it's what I had left over.
I gave the broken glass to Ronda, my neighbor who used it to do THIS picture project!

Perfect fit :)

Next, I took some leftover blue, from the Girls' bathroom, and painted the beadboard.
Everyone asks what color this is... and I hate to say... I mixed Dockside Blue, from Sherwin Williams, with a bunch of regular ol' semi-gloss white... so I don't have an EXACT color... BUT I did a little color matching and it is almost IDENTICAL to the color... "Upward" from Sherwin Williams!

Since I had all this beadboard below, on the wall, already... I didn't want to distress and REALLY bring out the beadboard in the frame...(is there such thing as beadboard overload??? lol)
So I just left it alone... but DID distress the frame, itself.
I just took some sandpaper and rubbed it along the edges!
Since the frame was already dark brown to begin with... No inking or glazing necessary! woohoo! :)

Next I took the canvases from Color Inc. Pro Lab, and removed the hanging hardware off the back.
(Because I wanted my canvases to lay totally flat on my board)
If you're hanging your canvases right on the wall, Color Inc. has you covered!  Each print is equip with hanging wire, AND these rubbery dots in each corner, so the canvas doesn't scratch up your wall!
Genius!

It's really NICE hardware!  So I'm keeping it for another project.
Hmmm... does that make me cheap or thrifty??? lol.

Next I took my BFF's and adhered them to the canvases...
I really, honestly have a problem... I think I have about 5 more packs of these amazing strips in the garage. LOL
They work for EVERYTHING!

I put the command strips on either edge, like so.

Then I positioned the canvases where I wanted them, and stuck them to the beadboard.

I also printed a family established vinyl decal, in two colors, and rubbed it on in that top left corner...
you can buy one HERE from me.

Ta-da!
A HUGE piece of personalized artwork, for my living room shelf!

Here is a picture, a little farther back, so you can kinda get the scale of the frame.
It's a great size!  Big enough to fill quite a bit of space on this huge shelf!  Just what I was looking for.
The canvas sizes are
16x20
8x11
and
12x12

So if I won a canvas - I'd have a nice photo of my family (dogs included) taken and I'd hang it above my couch. I had a vintage ladder hung there until the other night until it fell off the wall after months of hanging there.

  111. I have an old black and white Maytag ad that my mom and her family were in when she was a child. I would LOVE to have it on a canvas and put it in my laundry room. A canvas would be perfect because the ad is sort of an odd shape to frame....

  112. Shelley! Great idea! I would totally get the picture of my hubby and I on our honeymoon in MAUI! It was at sunset and I've never seen anything as amazing as that exact moment! H.O.S. is my daily read!

  117. Heidi Hill has sent you a link to a blog:

My husband is in very poor health (due to an anthrax shot he received in the military). Because he's not mobile my friends purchased a photo session for us to be done in our backyard. I would LOVE to be able to save this memory right. Thank you for sharing so freely (I follow).

    ReplyDelete
  118. First off, I find your blog so inspiring, especially since my house currently looks just like the photos of your before! You have such great ideas and are such an inspiration!

I would do a black & white canvas of my girls, or maybe the family and I love the idea of the family name and established date. So cute!

    ReplyDelete

  125. If I won I would totally have a picture of my two kids from when my son was just born. My daughter fell in love instantly, much to my surprise, and has never had any jealousy despite the 4 year age gap. She ADORES her brother and the feeling is mutual times ten for him. My favorite pic of them is her holding him and looking up the camera proudly smiling. Makes me melt thinking about it...

I LOVE your blog by the way!

  126. I love, love, love your blog and all the great ideas you share. I would love to get a canvase done of my time in Scotland with the rolled bailes of hay they had everywear on the patchwork fields.

  127. Luuurrrrvvvv the blog. You make me laugh, and I truly like all of your ideas. Wish I was that crafty. But you give me great inspiration.
If I won, this canvas, I have a really nice picture of my 3 daughter's playing in the sand. They are not facing the camera, but rather the ocean, it's just a picture that speaks to me, it shows me how their future holds so many possibilities, that strech out as far as the ocean. My oldest is going off to college in 1 year, and the sentiment seems so true, now more than ever. Sorry for the long comment!!!

  128. We were just at my nephew's wedding and our family photographer was doing the photobooth thing. We had a hilariously funny picture taken of us all decked out in hula gear and silly faces. Jason, the photographer, started laughing at how great it would be to blow it up and have it be our family photograph. I agree. It would be too fun! Soooooo....that's what I would print out for us. A silly family photograph which we just don't have enough of in our home. I feel that family photograph's make your house a home and I only have ONE 8x10 up.

  129. First off, I'm already a happy follower of your blog. I love that framed canvas project you did with the empty frame. I would love to have a picture of my little one that I took in an apple orchard last year.

Great job on the frame. I would have never thought to do it like that and yours looks so great! The vinyl lettering is a perfect touch too!

  148. I'm a new reader to your blog but I am beyond thrilled that I came across it. You have really inspired me to take on a few new projects... especially when we move into base housing :)

I know the perfect picture I would use...I took some pictures of our baby girl wrapped up in one of her daddy's uniform shirts. It's a total surprise for him, I wanted him to have special pictures to take with him to training. I would use the one of her laying wrapped up in the shirt looking up at the camera. I would put the canvas in the office/his "man cave" which is completely decorated with all his military pictures, awards, etc. I know it would mean the world to him plus she looks absolutely adorable :)

  159. I am a follower. I have 2 photos I would have to decide between getting printed on canvas. 1. A picture taken last year on my birthday of me in a cheap wedding dress riding one of my parents horses in a field. 2. A picture of my hubby and I on our wedding day. Well, its actually just a picture of our shoes, but to me it shows us walking on one path instead of two.

As for what I would put on my canvas....I would actually have to really think about it because I would want to put our latest family portrait on it but then I would also want to put something more timeless on it(because the family changes so much) like maybe a picture of the Salt Lake temple. Decisions, decisions. But for sure if I won it I would then start a large picture collage on my huge family room wall! Ooooh this has me excited!

I am so proud of myself because I don't usually do things like this! I told my crafty sis-in-law, "I bought a glue gun" She about died!!! I made one of your crate paper rose hanging balls!!
